she stated.
Another long-time resident was
elated with the broading up of the
abandoned houses. "I've lived in the
neighborhood for nine years," aid
Forest Newby. "I think they are
doing an excellent job boarding up
these houses. Folks can now feel safe
walking up and down the street. The
only thing we need now is to get rid .
of the rats," he said. .
H.O.P.,anon-profitorganization,
started nine months ago, employs the
homeless to board up the abandoned
houses that plague some city neigh

housed in the city," said Charles
Costa, the founder of H.O.P. " They
are paid $5 per hour. We are saving
lives and stablizing neighborhoods,"
Costa said. "We are cutting the can
cer below the roots," he tated.
According to Costa, the program
has national implications. "I see this
program going national because it
covers areas which are normally
negative and turns them postive. It is
the only program of its kind in the
country and acheiving many goals," .
he said.
With the recent dumping of
bodies in abandoned houses in High
land Park, Co ta hopes the program
will make the neighborhoods safer.
"By doing this, (boarding up the
houses) the arsonist will not go in
and bum it, the rapist will not grab
children, and the dope dealers will
not be able to set up hop in these
abandoned building, "he aid.
According to Public Safety Of
fice and Project Liaison Nobbie
Haze my , the project not only help
those who otherwise couldn't find a
job to be employed, it al 0 helps the
neighborhoods.
"If every resident were to give
fifty cents towards the program,
there wouldn't be an abandoned
house in Highland Park," he stated.
To date the H.O.P. project has
boarded up a total of 16 building in
the city.
