J
pent four months
writing bout her experien
ce , then veral months later
he was announced the
conte t' winner for her age
category. It meant her book
would be published and she
would receive a college
scholarship.
Although the prize money
is important for Anika's
education, the idea that
people around the country
were going to read about her
plight was much more impor
tant.
A D THE other
neighborhood children wit
ness the destructive,
dangerous life tyle of drug
pushers, drug users, and pros
titutes everyday. "So many
of the house are vacant on
our street," ays Anika. "It
makes the neighborhood look
bad. There are also a lot of
bars on the street and drunks
everywhere. People who sell
drugs and drug addicts are
everywhere. "
Throughout the book you
see Anika's illustrations
depicting the many negative
and positive influences in the
neighborhood.
One picture shows
children beating on other
children; a scene with drunks
sitting on the sidewalk; and
more significantly, a pretty
picture of her mother, the
most important person in her
life.
What stands out in
Anika's story is her strong
sense of hope. She has
enough ense to understand
that it's up to, her to stay on
track. Anika's mother is the
role model that gives her
strength and determination to
succeed. But Anika knows
she must also watch out for
herself in a world where com
munities cannot provide the
much-needed support, these
young people deserve. They
shouldn't have to go it alone.
DESPITE THE NEGA
TIVE things Anika faces, she
is looking forward to a fulfill
ing, productive future.
Having won the contest has
provided not only the
scholarship money, but
media exposure.
She no has the forum to
tell people what life is like in
the inner city for a 15-year
old who has the same dreams
as a 15-year-old living in the
suburbs. The difference is
that inner city children
believe they have fewer op
portunitie to fulfill them.
We m t e ure that every
child has the love and support
to achieve their dreams.
For Anika there i no ques
tion of whether sh will suc
ceed in school and go to
college and make it out of the
neighborhood. I know thi is
just the be inning for her.

To get enough vitamin A. the U'.S. dietary guidelines call for three to five servings ofveg8tables
per day, two to four servings per day of fruits plus six to eleven servings per day of bread, rice,
