LANSING-Michigan voters may
get the chance In November to
decide whether term limitations
hould be imposed on polidcia .
And ina recent Capital News Ser-
,vice press conference the idea of a
term limitation gained support from
one of the state's most powerful
peltticians, Gov. John Engler, a
former four-term state representative
and three-term senator.
"It depends on the proposal, but I
don't have a problem with that at
aU," Engler said.
At least ODe proposallooD Iltcly
to be on the November ballot.
"WE WANT TO get govern
ment b ck into the banda of the
people, "said Glenn Steil, chair of the
Campaign to Limit Politicians'
Terms .
The petition, currently awaiting
certification, would limit tate repre
sentatives to serving three terms,
state and attorney general to two
terms. Umitatlons also would be
Imposed on members of Congress.
Currently three states, California,
Oklahoma and Colorado, have term
limitations for legislators, Steil said.
Term limitations for governors have
been imposed in twenty- even ltatel
including Indiana, which has a six
yeAr limitation.
Organizations in 16 other states
are working to put the same proposal
on the November ballot.
There needs to be more of a turn
over in office, Stell said. Politicians
are worrying more about getting
their pensions than worrying about
representing the people.
AFTER EIGHT YEARS in of
fice, state legislators are eligible to
receive a yearly pension of about
$15,000 that Includes cost of livinS
increasea, Steil laid. And that goes
up with the length of time the legia
lator ervea.
"It used to be that politicians
would make laws and then go back
and live under those laws, " Steil said.
Now they make laws and exempt
themselves from them, he said.
