Their domestic economy 8 shambles, worker tream acros the Rio Grande

By KENNETH SNODGRASS
As I anticipated reading the sum
mary of tJle legislative hearing of the
African American Male, I was look
ing foIWard to leelng the projected
facts, solution for solving the prob
lem and changing the decaying situa
tion of African in Amedca.
But before I able to read the
ummary, one of the "major" pl'ClSel
. had an article that snmmari:zed the
bearing summary by .. ying that a
University of Chicago report
predictccl that at least 70 percent of
til Black mal ould be on drup,
imprisoDcc1or dead by the year 2000.
One would believe from the ar
tide that the Univcllity tudy was the
conclusion of the Lcgillative bear-
ing. In reality it only • added
point to 1e the Iity of the
}leadng ,
Ironically after laying up]a to
fiDalize this artide, the om day I
came ho c. for lunch and the
telephoDC rang.
I ANSWERED it and the
operator said, "You have • collect
call from a Kenneth (my son). Will
you accept the call?- I said yes.
Then the peDon on the othercnc1 said,
"Dad I been shot, come and get mel"
I said, "Where are you?- He said,
"On Greenfield aud Fcnkell.-
I panicked and ran to my car and
race to Femll, to find DO ODe re.
I tbal went to his school to see if he
w tba:e.1k and what a relief!
I take aaio the UDive.mity of
Chicago study aDd the report from
the Executive Hearing that said
today:
- One in every four young
Afrioan-Amcrlcanmalea .. 20 to 29
are behiDd baD, on parole, or on
pro oa.
- The incarceration rate for
Afdc::an-Amcdcan malea 3109 per
100,000 in Demoaatic Amcrlca.n.
Wbile it's only 729 per 100,000 in
South Africa.
- Young African males living in
Wayne County have the highest
chance of being a victim of a
homicide than anywhere else in the
U.s.A
- African-American mal have
the greatest risk of cancer, drug
abuse, hypertension, homicide,
chronic lung disease, cerebrovas
culard.isease, cardiovaculardiscase,
and sexully-transmitte4 diseases
than other Americans.
A important point DOt made at the
bNring by JawaDZl Kunjufu in hiI
book, "Black Economics: t in
the African American community
the largest employeD hnc become
the military, Mna1d's, aDd and
