Why Am I
By NATHANIEL SCOTT
S.ff Writ.,
DETROIT-We peak about the
magic of poetry and about the
my tery of the p t. We hang upon
ttl word of tory tellers concep
tlizing life a they understand it;
preceive it; wi h it to be. We tly the
carpet ride of di turbanc through
t voice; and if and when a person
become a poet, a voice he or she
must have. that rat-tat-tats the logi

: Why Am I So Brown is Sanchez's
ftfth volurn of poetry. It explore
many of the myths one experience
when pigmentation of the skin be
comes a di traction. And it peaks
about the injustices of a nation that
sems to have gone mad with a desire
t self de truct.
.
: IN THE TITL P em, Why Am

color .. .it is:/a state of being, a very
human texture/alive and full of ong.
celebrating-i-rdanclng to the new
world/which is for everyone ... "
. The new world i Sanchez'
vision; his way of denouncing
hypocrisy. Hi way of aying look,
li ten, there are stories within torie .
Sanchez' poetry is both simple
and complex. It peaks truth as only
one who has gone through the rigors
of an unjust ociety can expre it.
He use two languages, English
and Spanish to weave the themes of
the book, ethnicity, loyalty to riend
and his Hispanic heritage, and th
empowerment of word that attack
politically.
His voice ings the barrio and the
ghetto sound of indignatioon with
the rhythm and the music of a con
trolled pen.

Homecoming for works
of G.lan on Dowdell
Homecoming, an exhibition
featuring the works of Glanton Dow
dell, a native Detroiter who went into
exile in 1968, and still resides in
Stockholm .
A retrospective view of his life
experiences, described by rum as
"organic, spontaneous, and chaotic, "
is represented in oils and other
media.
Glanton, who' confesses that two
contrapuntal themes run through his
life, "confusion" and "embarrass
ment," has managed to convey per
serverance .in the .seventeen
masterworks shown at Arts Ex
tended Gallery.
Hanging, The Family, The
Couple, The Prisoner, Veteran and
Alter Ego are pieces which ex
emplify Glanton's philosophies,
ideologies and talent.
His fine artistry was encouraged
by Leroy Foster, "the most able
painter I've ever known."
Foster's inspiration lead, the
young Glanton to study at Arts &
Crafts and the Chicago Arts Institute.
He has been able to translate IDs
creativity into a new life of teaching,
painting and writing. Glanton still
has a message to send.
