HIGHLAND PARK'S crime
rate is down 26 percent, the mayor,
aid. The hiring of eight new. safety
officers figure in the declining rate .
In regards to the Mayor and the
council working, effectively
together, the mayor responded by as
king: "Why not start communicating
today? Why not today!!!"
She added, "If you don't stand for,
something, you will fall for any
thing."
The Mayor addressed the third
area of concern, economics and ci ty
tax base by saying she has "cut" her
appointed staff, reduced the city's
deficit, brought ;n new 32 busi
nesses, is having dialogue with
A&P, and will continue to move the
city forward.
"SHE CALLED because
thi ... Oh! I forgot, woman of the

. said. "She still hasn't decided
who to vote for Tuesday, Novem
ber 5."
"That's right, Wrote. This is

• desperate" Wrote. I need your
help."
"Hush that fuss, chile. All you
. need is Jesus, " Sister Pearl said. "I
done ady voted absenteeism.
'Taint no problem at all. Just vote
for the best candidate."
"And who might that be Mrs
Words of Wisdon," Sam cut in.
"Back off Sam," Wichita said.
"You don't live and you don't
vote in Highland Park and you are
certainly not politically astute. So
hut up. Who knows? you might
learn something."
"WELL?" I a ked. "Have you
attended any of the 8 tended
debate? read any literature?
checked the candidates recorqs?
loo,ked at whether their promises
are logical or political rhetoric?
and determined, to the best of
your ability, if what their visions
are similar to what you think this
city needs to move forWard?"
"Well .. .l've done some of that
but not all. You must remember:
1 am a working woman. I have
other things to attend to."
, "I also remember you saying,
you didn't want to be a part of the
problem," I reminde.d her. "If you
vote and you are not prepared to
vote, you are worse than the per
son who doesn't vote."
"Why?" Wichita asked. "Why
can't I just vote for a person be
cause 1 like. the way they wear
. their hair? the kind of car they
drive? whether or not they eat cer
tala kinds of food? how long
they've been in the community?
Why? Why is it incumbent upon
me to be responsible?"
"Hey!" I said, "When you
vote, ain't nobody there but you
and God. But you should pull the
lever for Highland Park, not
Wichita. That's your respon
sibility, Wichita. Responsible
"government. And that's the bot
tom line."
