Justice Marshall

He enrolled in Howard
University's law program after the
University of Maryland rejected .
him because he w Black.
: He worked as a lawyer for the

JUSICE MARSHALL spent
two decades fighting racial dis
crimination alongside a brave band
Of Black parents and students in
courtrooms throughout the South
and the nation. Among the suits he
filed was one ensuring that Black
teachers' salaries were equal to
white teachers' salaries.
.A lot of young people today
complain about life .being hard.
Of-ten they don't know what hard
Is. When Justice Marshall started
out, his "tough as nails" approach
did not win him a lot of white 'sym ..
pathy. His life was often
threatened. But he pressed on.
en came his battle for Brown vs.
Board of Education in 1954. Jus-
icarshall 's efforts destroyed
the egal notion that separate was

remember that day as if it
were yesterday. As a 14-year-old
girl, I had waited many months
with my father for the court to
decide so that I could escape my
segregated Black school in rural
South Carolina. The Brown case,
decided the week after my Daddy
died, said I could. But in my town,
as in many throughout the South,
implementing Brown took many
years, indeed decades.
In 1967 President Johnson ap
pointed Justice Marshall to the
Supreme Court, where he served
nearly 25 years as Justice, continu
ing his commitment to make
America'a promises real for the
poor, minorites, and other disad ..
vantaged groups and individuals.
JUSTICE HALL
NEVER fo tis beginnings and
never lost his empathy with poor,
oppressed or powerless people of
any race or gender. He combined a
good heart with a sharp mind and a
tough-minded opposition to unfair
ness and injustice. We must hope
that all tho Justices strive t meet
these standards.

Administrators and staff of
Madonna University and Highland
Park Oommunity College will soon
sign a nursing articulation agreement
that will enable nursing students
with an associate degree from High
land Park to complete a bachelor of
science in nursing degree at Maden
na on a more timely basis.
Through this agreement, which is
similar to those Madonna has estab
lished with Henry Ford, Oakland
Community and Schoolcraft Col
leges, courses are coordinated more
effectively, resulting in a minimum
of class repetition for tudents, as
well as a savings in education costs.
"We're very happy to join in this,
cooperative venture," said Highland
Park Community College President,
Dr. Charles Mitchell." will benefit
not only our institutions, but the stu

important thing. Madonna and
Highland Park are very' committed to
the entire Metro Detroit area and we

ALTH H BOTH can-
didate are n the final stretch of the
race for mayor, Johnson said that she
got both to agree to such a meeting
after the election, no matter which
one won.
She believes that before the city
can get new business, it must get rid
of blight and get new housing stock
and children of chool age. She will
seek grants to get businesses to come .
in. ------- .... ---...._",
She would get rid of abandoned
housing by passing stricter ordinan-
. ces against those who leave housing
vacant and blighted. And doing
nothing to deal with burne out
structures. She would Ii to see
'about salvaging and re ovating
vacant houses, making them tem
porary shelter for the homeless
people and affordable low and mid
dle income housing for new resi
dents.
Although Johnson once passed
around a petition to abolish the
Public Safety Department, uniting'
police and fire services, and restore
separate police and fire departments,
she has changed her mind, believing
that such an arrangement would be
too costly to a city caught in a serious
budget crisis. .

Greta Johnson, running for city

She believe a lot more could be

two ecretaries and police officers
serving body guards. .
" A city of 2.9 miles does not po e
any threat to the mayor," she said.
"Potice officers should be on the
treet, not guarding the mayor."
Talking to the tate about the po -
