"Before I had an education I had
to do more to feel as good as
everyone else," says Kalamazoo's
Finest Number VIII, Charles Parker.
"My re urn was longer than anyone

more." •
Parker believes society puts uch
an emphasis on education until in
adequacy results for many.
" After becoming educated I aw '
it wasn't about the degree, it was
about being yourself," he aid. If
you're in harmony with yourself
(body, mind, and soul) then you're
complete. You're then capable of
working wi th people, according to
this 2D-year Human Services
veteran.
Director of Urban Youth

programs in the community to-reach
young people at ri k who aren't able
to participate in traditional YMCA

The oldest of twelve Siblings,
Parker learned early how to ad
minister to the needs of others.
Responsibility for the upbringing of
his brothers and sisters led Parker to
the helping profession.
A 3D-year northside resident,
Parker's dedication to his job still
leaves time to enjoy his family, in

Other community commitments

of Dentistry took steps as students to
make community service a part of
their education.
According to a recent U-M con
ference report, 12 percent of the U.S.
population is Black, but only 2.6 per
cent of the 142,000 U.S dentists were
Black in 1999._the same percentage
as in 1980 and 1970.
"WORKING IN THE Com
munity was really important to all of
us," Campbell says. "It was and is
crucial that we not forget where we
come from and give back to the com
munityas much as possible."
