item for you I
Someone mentioned a pro
gram called "The Arts In
cubator", and it's located
within the Highland Park
Community College complex,
in Highland 'Park, Michigan.
Of course my first thoughts
were of one of those hospital
incubators', stocked with a
bunch of artistic items.
(smile) But as we talked on I
found out that it's really an
educational and business pro
gram.
The Arts Incubator is a uni
que program designed to as-
ist Michigan based, African
American arts organizations,
to grow and develop over
three to five -ye ars in a shel
tered environment, under the
guidance of skill'ed profe -
sionals and educators.
. At the Arts Incubator, or
ganizations will have access
to management support ser
vices, off i c e staff, office
space and the latest in office
technology. Organizations in
the Arts Incubator will par
ticipate in regular training
programs which will provide
information and teach skills
and stabilize an organization,
and bui ld a sol id founda tion
for the future.
Among' the topics to be in-
cluded will bc:
-Defining your market
and reaching new audiences
-Short and long term plan
ning for success
-Developing and using
promotional materials that
work
-Budget developing and
fin fl n cl a I ... p fan n i n g for the
1990's
-So you want to tour?
Creating an effective booking
operation. '
THERE'S MUCH more
that will be presented as
development goes on.
Tenants (organizations) will
be selected by using the fol
lowing criterta: ("one or more
must apply"). Organizations
must have been in existence
for a minimum of five years.
Organizations that have been
selected to participate in the
Arts Organization Develop
ment Program, which is spon
sored by the Michigan
Council for the Arts; ore'
ganizations that are currently
on the roster for The New In
itiative For Arts Program, the
Midwest Performing Arts of
Dance Touring Programs, or
organizations that have ex
.pressed interest in being
housed and/or using the
facilities available at the
Highland Park Community
College to serve as 'an educa
tional vehicle for the college
and the community.
