BOW DID WE get into such
a ss? The diagnosis, though
harsh and painful, bas to be
faced. Mucb of the disease and
disability afflicting our citizens
is a consequence of unwise
health behavior and lifestyle.
Mucb of this is rooted in the
alienation, isolation, and lack of
direction that comes from the dis
integration of the institutions,
like family and community, that
.generate values.
What is the prescription? One
important part of the solution
must be a renewed sense of per-
.sonal responsibility on the part of
every citizen and our mutual sup
port for one' another in making.
positive, healthy choices for our
lives.
In short, I am calling for a
revitalized "culture of character"
in America.
