The Cameige Corporation has
approved a grant of $450,000 to
be NAACP' Special
Contribution Fund for. upport of
the Southern Education Team -
a unique collaboration between
the AACP's Legal and
Education Departments in the
seven states of the Deep South.
Compo ed of an attorney and
education pecialist, ba ed in
Atlanta, the team works closely
together and with the local
branche of the AACP to
identify and respond to
discriminatory educational
policies and practices throughout
the area. (In luded in the area arc
the states of Alabama, Florida,
Georgia, Missis ippi, North
Carolina. South Carolina and
Tennessee).
In ddition, the team works
with local NAACP branches to
involve more minority p rents in
the proces of improving the
schools. training them to be more
effective advocates for
education and alerting them to
the major local educational

It also teach volunteers how
to collect and analyze data and
file complaints WIth appropriate
agencies.

In 1989 the Education Team
achieved significant gains in-a
number of school ystems
throughout the South. For
example, - in Miami-Dade
County, florida, the chool board
agreed to work with the president
and former pre ident of the local
NAACP branch, well the
team's education specialist, to
ensure culturally based
schooling.
The board also voted to
incorporate a
m ul t i-cul tural/m ul ti -ethnic
curricul urn into the school system
by 1990.
In Amite County, Mi i ippi
the team persuaded the bool
board to appoint blac nior
level administrator and to work
with a newly organized biracial
commi tl. c to hrrc more
black-based admini trators.
In another in tancc, after
having had serious
discrimination Charge made
against it by the local NAACP
and the team's ed uc tion t'
specialist the Charlton County,
Georgia, school board made
meaningful efforts to correct
discri rnina tory practices
including hiring more black
teacher and admini trators,

promoting and retaining blac
pro essional , and giving blac .
teachers opportunities to be fit
from stipened pay programs.
As the leading American
foundation in' the field of
education, Carnegie been a
major source <!f upport for the
AACP school desegregation
efforts. Since 1966, Carnegie bas
provided over $2.8 million in
grants to t� NAACP Special
Contribution Fund for thi
purpose, much of which been
u ed to desegregate major
municipal school' sy tems
throughout the I ort st,
Midwest and Far West.
