BENTO HARBOR - A
pilot project aimed at bringing
10 -income housing up to code
has recently been initiated in
Beaton Harbor and Benton
Townahip in cooperation with
the Michigan Department of So
clal Services (MDSS).
This ne project is respond
ing to the 1985 report of the
Michigan Housing T Force
. ch tated in one of its recom
mendations that DSS should
alter its elter vendoring policy
to encourage landlords to insure
th t rental units meet local

Shelter vcndoring is a
tatewidc process of sending the
rental payment of welfare
clients directly to dlords. In
Berrien COUDty alone, thi
amounts to about $491,000 per
month.

This project is just one of a num
ber of initiatives begun through
DSS Office of Special Projects.

Thi special vendoring
project was implemented in
Berrien County on November 4,
1987. Similar projects are also
under way in Grand Rapids and
Muskegon Heights and plans
are being made to extend it to
the entire state.
Rental properties will be
referred· to the local
municipalities for inspection. If
serious code violations poten
tially threaten the health and
safety of the occupants, DSS will
stop vendor payments and in

start providing AIDS counsel
ing and testing services to the
public on Tuesday, December
1, 1987.

Winter semester classes at Lake
Michigan College. Over 500
classes are offered in the Winter
schedule. Classes are con
veniently scheduled for variety
of daytime and evening hours.
Registrtion for full or part-,
time students began on Monday,
November 16 and will end on
December 18. Registration is
being held at the main campus
located on Napier Avenue in
Benton Township on wee days
between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Special extended hours of 11:30
a.m. to 6:30 p.m, will be held on
the main campus on November
23 and 24.
