This ne project is respond­ ing to the 1985 report of the Michigan Housing T Force . ch tated in one of its recom­ mendations that DSS should alter its elter vendoring policy to encourage landlords to insure th t rental units meet local codes, according to Wes Bower- Ope r man, Berrien DSS Director. Shelter vcndoring is a tatewidc process of sending the rental payment of welfare clients directly to dlords. In Berrien COUDty alone, thi amounts to about $491,000 per month. This project is just one of a num­ ber of initiatives begun through DSS Office of Special Projects.
