Flint's Whiting Auditorium on
unday, eptember 6.
Automobile workers in Y p
silanti formed a theatre group
called the Workers' Concept
Theatre which staged a com
memorative drama of Flint's
historic Sit Down Strike called
"When You Strike Flint..."
The director of the play,
Cheryl Buswell-Robinson, an
inspector at the, General
Motors Hydromatic Transmis
sion plant in Willow Run, says
tht workers' Theatre is dif
ferent and important.
"The reason for our ing
is not to do South Pacific, it is
not to do Funny Girl, it's not
to do The Sound Of Music.
It's to tell the stories of our
lives," she said. "The popular
media don't tell the stories of
our lives. They depict a per
ception of our lives that may
or may not be accurate. By
and large, when workers' cul
ture is shown in the media, it's
a caricature: the Archie
Bunker type.
The play has two acts. The
first act is a historical depic
tion of the 1937 Sit down
Strike at General Motors as
seen through the eye of two
families: the Washington's, a
family of outhern Blacks who
have migrated to the orth in
order to escape both the
racism of outhern Jim Cro
and Sharecropping. Th
Mahoneys, immigrants who
ar fleeing Europ 's caste
form of racism and Ireland's
special form of poverty: the
potato blight.
