SUPPORT THESE A
BUSI ESSES TOO
I was talking to friend the
other day when she stopped to
voice her concern bout the
problem of what to do with her
ten-year-old son during the m
mer while she works full time.
Children of all age tend to
need clo supervrsion, Do
they need Ie during the
summer? "ot hardly" a
little voice in the back of my
mind mumbled.
As I began to think about
this problem more and more,
I ept king myself, ' hat
do p rents do when both
p rents, or single parent
works year round?". Relatives
and close friends may solve
some of the problems orne of
the time but what about the
parent who do not have these
relative and friend around.
Afterall, children cannot go to
preschool, ummer school and
camp forever!
I wondered if there is any
correlation between increased
incidence of teen pregnancy,
alcohol and drug abuse, well
as run-aways during the summer
months. (If I ever find orne
stati tics on this I will let you
know).
To mea long story short
(and productive), what can
orking mothers do about the
above ituation? First, be
aware if you are one of the
parents working full time, year
round (men included) that you
need to keep your eyes open
and plan during the winter
months for tho e summer
months. A your child long
in dvance of summer if they
have any pecial interests or
projects they would like to
ork on - maybe even with
another child whose mother
does not work (mothers who do
not wor outside the home are
increasingly h rd to flnd). .
Talk with your employer
about the possibility of a sum
mer leave or at least about
decreasing your hours. Make
sure you explain the benefits
to your company or agency
regarding the money they will
save as well as your loyalty to
the company. You may also
include the fact that they will
be . helping some college bound
student earn that needed money
for college. Find out about
job sharing plans (explain it to
your bo ) and make sure you
h ve someone in mind with
similar experience or expertise
who is willing to share your
job. A little integrity on your
sharing mate's part wouldn't
hurt (you do want to keep
your job). You might want to
catch up all your wor before
you start asking for decreased
hours so your boss and you
will feel comfortable you can do
the work in le time and that
you are not leaving work for
someone else.
Last, but not least, simply
be aware of the complications
of not being home with your
child during this time and how
it may effect them. Keep
your eyes on job possibilities
that may offer flexible work
chedules (these usually do not
include fringe benefits). Re
member the most important
person involved in these plans,
your child, and ask them.
You m y be pleasantly sur
prised at how productive they
are in helping you olve this
age old problem.
