County, W.V., school system's Keep a
Child . in School is an intervention-type
program de gned to prevent under
achievers or I potential dropout from
quitting school.'
. The program's main purpose is to pro
vide children from kindergarten through
12th grade with experiences to improve
their self-concept anp motivate them to
remain in school. Students are matched
ith adults who live nearby, and each -
week, the duo spends time together.
The ponsoring . adult can provide trans
portation to school or social events,
.help WIth homework, a sympathetic
. ear for problems or just companionship.
Sponsors are encouraged to keep 'in
touch with the student's teachers, dis
cuss future plans, assist with hobbies
and acqualrtt the youngster With the •
cultural and social activitie in the com
rnunity. The Keep a Child in School
program is a volunteer operation, gover -
ed by a board of. directors and a part
time administrator and organizations and
private foundations.
· The program began in. Kanawha
County in 1966 and currently has 75
active sponsorships with many tudents
on a 'waiting list. ,.

Treen signing the remap into law on
