support and resources from Jewish
students on campus following this
string of attacks.
Eisenberger said the incident that
occurred most recently is being down-
played by law authorities. He has been
in contact with the student who was
punched as well as other witnesses
living at the fraternity house who said
the group of individuals seemed to be
of Arab descent.
“If a guy goes up to a very well-
known Jewish senior fraternity house
where Jewish guys are standing on
the porch, and then a group of Arabs
come and punched a Jewish guy in
the face, who then required stitches,
we can see what’s going on there,

Eisenberger said. “Obviously, it is an
antisemitic attack. The attacker doesn’t
have to say, ‘Hey, Jew’ and then punch
him to be considered a hate crime.
Just like the police tried to downplay
the incident last week saying it was an
incident of white supremacy.

Eisenberger said the JRC, as part of
its student-led shmira efforts, is talking
with police about what legal defense
mechanisms can be used by students,
including carrying pepper spray with
them. The JRC has also received a
grant to offer a weeklong self-defense
course from skilled instructors.

A DISTURBING EXPERIENCE
At the university level, Eisenberger
said he has received calls of sup-
port from University Regent Sarah
Hubbard and has had multiple phone
calls with Ono.
“Ono has been in touch with me on
my cell phone multiple times a day,

Eisenberger said. “He is taking this
very, very seriously.

Early Saturday morning around
12:30, a Jewish woman sophomore
who wished to remain anonymous for
safety reasons said she was walking
by the Hillel when she saw a group
of individuals approaching another
group and they began shouting at each
other. The woman, who was walking
with her boyfriend, said they heard
some yelling “F*** Palestine” at the
other group.
“They all started yelling at each

other, and my boyfriend took me by
the arm and led us quickly away,
” said
the sophomore.
The student said 10 minutes later,
she and her boyfriend were walking
on Washtenaw Street when they saw a
car of individuals with a few standing
up through the rear sunroof scream-
ing “Israel or Palestine” at pedestrians
as they walked on the sidewalk. The
motorists were not waving any flags or
wearing keffiyehs, the sophomore said.
“They were doing it to egg people
on, like, they were asking people on
the street to take a side,
” said the soph-
omore. “I was really rattled after that. I
didn’t want to think about what could
have happened if I was visibly wearing
my Jewish star, but the fact that I have
to think twice about wearing a Jewish
star — and have a fear of that — is
troubling. If the JRC is putting togeth-
er a WhatsApp group of volunteers to
walk Jewish students around at night
so we don’t have to be alone, I think I
would take them up on that offer.

Jan Moss, a parent of a University
of Michigan student, said she under-
stands emotions are running high, but
people need to be patient and allow
law enforcement authorities do to their
investigative work. Moss, from Chicago,
said she is pleased with the proactive
approach the university has taken so far
this semester, such as quickly disband-
ing a pro-Palestinian “die in” protest on
The Diag during the annual Festifall
event and having a strong police pres-
ence at a recent job fair. Last semester,
pro-Palestinian demonstrators were
so disruptive that some prospective
employers could not properly partici-
pate in tabling at the event.
“Overall, from what I am hearing,
our Jewish students are happy,
” Moss
said. “They are going out socially,
wearing their Jewish stars and hanging
their mezzuzahs. When things hap-
pen like this, yes, it is scary. I think
[President] Ono and the police this
year have been incredible at official
on-campus events. What happens
at night outside a fraternity party is
harder to control. We will all have to
be patient until we learn what actually
happened.
