ed better environments for
workers. His first major Ford
project was the company’s
Highland Park Plant, which
opened in January 1910.
He later designed the Ford
Rouge Complex and many
other Ford facilities.
In 2020, the Albert Kahn
Legacy Foundation, a non-
profit organization, was
established in Detroit to rec-
ognize and expand knowl-
edge of Kahn’s achievements.
In 2021, foundation board
members met with top exec-
utives of The Henry Ford.
According to Levi Smith,
vice president of the founda-
tion, they proposed to The
Henry Ford’s top executives
that a building be created in
Greenfield Village to show-
case Kahn’s contribution to
innovative industrial design.
The Albert Kahn Foundation
was willing to underwrite it.
The Foundation Museum
officials responded that they

would consider it, but later
said there wasn’t space for
such a structure.
However, when the Albert
Legacy Foundation creat-
ed an exhibit about Kahn’s
life and work at the Detroit
Historical Museum two years
ago, Henry Ford Museum
officials came to see it.
A few months ago, The
Henry Ford opened a new
building near the Greenfield
Village entrance — a
restaurant named Stand 44,
designed to resemble Ford’s
Highland Park Plant, which
was designed by Albert Kahn
and Associates. Built in 1908,
the building was dubbed the
“Crystal Palace,” according
to Smith, because of its large
windows and roof panels
that could be opened from
inside. The building’s natural
light was a big improvement
over the illumination pro-
vided by early 20th-century
light bulbs.

Stand 44 has high ceilings
and roof panels similar to
the Highland Park Plant. In
the Stand 44’s entrance, a
large panel with photographs
describes Kahn’s contribution

to American architecture and
the Ford Motor Company.
As Smith explains, “It took
95 years (since the museum
opened), but Kahn got recogni-
tion as a Jewish innovator.”
