E

lanna (Kaufman)
Broder, 76, of
Farmington Hills, died
Sept. 24, 2023, after battling
ovarian cancer for
more than two
years.
Elanna loved
her family, and
she also loved to
dance. She start-
ed taking ballet
classes as a child
and returned to
ballet in her 30s, taking three
classes a week and continuing
even after cancer surgery. She
was also an avid sewer, cre-
ating clothing for herself, her
daughters, her granddaughters
and their dolls; she even made
her own wedding dress.

An only child, Elanna was
born on July 24, 1947, in
Detroit to Lucille (Fischer) and
the late Alexander Kaufman.
She was only 4 when her
mother died of complications
from diabetes, and Elanna was
raised from the age of 5 by her
father and stepmother, Grace
Kaufman, both of whom died
while Elanna was in her 30s.
Elanna was also a devoted and
beloved daughter to her moth-
er- and father-in-law, Frances
and Herman Broder, until
their recent passing.
Elanna graduated from
Wayne State University (B.S.
1969), where she also earned
a Master of Education (M.E.
1975). She taught elementary
school in the Detroit Public
School System until her eldest

child was born. After that, she
prioritized being a mom, shut-
tling her daughters to their
ballet classes, having the best-
stocked pantry in town and
making a homemade dinner
nearly every night. She attend-
ed Hebrew classes to help her
children with their homework
at Hillel Day School, where
she also taught cooking class-
es. As her children grew, she
started a new career in sales,
selling computers to schools
in the 1980s and selling digital
duplicators and copiers in the
1990s.
Through it all she remained
a life partner in every way
to her cherished husband,
Rodney.
Mrs. Broder is survived
by her high school sweet-

heart and husband of 54
years, Rodney Broder; their
two daughters and sons-
in-law, Rochelle Broder-
Singer and Scott Singer, and
Ilyse (Broder) and Lonny
Goldsmith; her adored grand-
daughters, Hannah and Emma
Goldsmith; her darling dog,
Lulu.
Interment was at Adat
Shalom Memorial Park.
