F
rederick S. Yaffe, 86, of
Bloomfield Hills, died April 14,
2019.
The Detroit advertising community
lost one of its most influential trail-
blazers, a man who was an integral
industry leader during
the last 60 years, when
Adcraft Hall of Famer
Fred Yaffe passed away
peacefully after a long
battle with illness.
There has been an
agency with Fred Yaffe’
s name on it
in the Detroit ad community since
1959. He has helped some of the
biggest brands locally and nationally
reach their business goals and achieve
success. Fred was there in the early
years of Little Caesar’
s Pizza, coining
the iconic phrase “Pizza, Pizza.
” He
worked with many of Detroit top
brands, including Perry Drug Stores,
Art Van, Faygo, ABC Warehouse and
countless others. For his clients, Fred
believed that helping them succeed
went beyond just their marketing. He
became immersed in their business
and looked for ways to make their
business better, whether it was a mar-
keting solution, a business solution or
something completely out of the box.
Mr. Yaffe was an industry leader
who helped the Detroit ad industry
become what it is today, but he was an
entrepreneur beyond running his own
agencies, investing in everything from
quick service restaurants to elevator
jack hole drilling.
He leaves behind a legacy of hun-
dreds of lives and careers in the adver-
tising community who were influ-
enced by his guiding hand. For him, it
was always about the people. Over the
years, he became close friends not with
just his clients but with many dignitar-
ies, athletes, entertainers, and business
and industry leaders.
Mr. Yaffe always sought perfection:
for his clients, for his friends, for him-
self. He knew perfection was rarely
attainable but believed that was no
reason not to try. He would push you
to be your best and to make sure you
believed in what you were doing. More
importantly, he cared. It is that part of
him that will be missed above all. It
is as much his legacy as the indelible
footprints he left in his wake.
Robert Frost once said, “I may
return if dissatisfied with what I learn
from having died.
” It would not sur-
prise those who knew Fred Yaffe if he
was to do just that.
Fred Yaffe is survived by his wife,
Kathy Yaffe; son and daughter-in-law,
James Yaffe and Jane Ross; grandchil-
dren, India and Jonathan Yaffe; broth-
ers-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas
Fitzpatrick, John Fitzpatrick, Loraine
Fitzpatrick; nieces and nephews,
Thomas Fitzpatrick Jr., Kimberly and
Michael Crimado, Kelly Fitzpatrick,
and John and Ron Fitzpatrick.
Mr. Yaffe was the loving brother of
the late Theodore Yaffe.
Interment was at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be made to
