F INE C HINESE D INING

“A wonderful adventure in fine dining” ~ Danny Raskin

The documentary Eating Animals is
based on a book of the same name by
Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything Is
Illuminated), 41. Foer’s study of the hor-
rors associated with factory farming so
impressed actress Natalie Portman, 37,
that she got Foer’s permission to turn it
into a documentary, which she narrates
(Portman became a vegetarian at age 8
and a vegan in 2009). Advance reviews
praise the way in which the filmmak-
ers went undercover, at some risk, to
film some very cruel practices. (Opens
Friday, July 6, at the Maple Theater in
Bloomfield Township.)
Ant-Man and the Wasp features Marvel
heroes with the incredible ability to
shrink. Paul Rudd, 49, who starred in the
2015 film Ant-Man, reprises that title role
in this film. Evangeline Lily, who had a
co-starring role as the Wasp in the 2015
film, returns for the sequel. The plot has
Ant-Man (AKA Scott Lang) torn between
his new role as a husband and father
and the call of duty when the Wasp says
she really, really needs his help (opens
July 6).
Michael Douglas, 73, also reprises his
role as Hank Pym, an entomologist who
was the original Ant-Man back in the
’60s. He passed the baton, as it were, to
Scott Lang. Also: Look for Ant-Man comic
co-creator Stan Lee, 95, in a cameo
role. Parental note: The Ant-Man films
are lighter and more family-friendly than
most Marvel pics.
On July 13, at midnight, the Landmark
Main Art Theater in Royal Oak is cel-
ebrating the 50th anniversary of the
animated Beatles’ film Yellow Submarine
by screening a digitally restored, 4K print
of the film. The story the film was based
on was written by psychoanalyst Lee
Minoff, now 83, and he is co-credited
with the screenplay (along with the late
Erich Segal of Love Story fame).

Anthony Bourdain, hands down, was
the best host of a travel and cooking
show. (Bourdain was the always-secular
son of a Jewish mother and a non-Jew-
ish father). However, Phil Rosenthal’s
Netflix series, Somebody Feed Phil, is at
least in the same league as Bourdain’s
shows. It is a witty and interesting look
at the cultures and food of the worldwide
places Rosenthal visits. The show’s com-
plete second season starts streaming
on July 6. Rosenthal, 58, was the co-
creator of the mega-hit Everybody Loves
Raymond. He has been married since
1990 to Monica Horan, 55, who played
Amy, the wife of Raymond’s policeman
brother in Raymond.

The second season of Glow, the hit
comedy/drama about pro women’s
wrestling, began streaming on June 29.
The performance of Alison Brie, 35, in
the lead role earned her a Golden Globe
nomination this year. Co-stars include
Marc Maron, 54, and Jackie Tohn, 36.
The hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why
released its second season in May. This
series has attracted controversy because
of its focus on teen suicide. I haven’t
written about it because I didn’t know,
until quite recently, that the author of the
book it’s based on, Jay Asher, 42, has
a Jewish father, and that a series star,
Brandon Flynn (who plays Justin), 24,
has a Jewish mother. Flynn (who is dat-
ing singer Sam Smith) has made com-
ments that seem to indicate he identifies
as Jewish. •
