D
r. Jules Altman’s legacy
extends beyond his reputa-
tion as a nationally known
dermatologist and revered teacher
and mentor.
While he served
as president of
the Michigan
Dermatological
Society (1975-76)
and held committee
positions with the
American Academy of
Dermatology, he also
bears remembering
for his remarkably
Dr. Jules Altman
optimistic and easy-
going, relaxed style
that made everyone
feel at ease. His family
called him a wonderful husband,
a loving and inspired father and
father-in-law, a connected and
engaged grandfather, and a devot-
ed friend.
Dr. Altman, 87, of Bloomfield
Hills, died June 12, 2018.
Officiating at his funeral, Rabbi
Joseph Krakoff spoke of Jules’
“magnetic, charismatic personal-
ity,” noting that “he was guided
by humility, empathy and most
of all — integrity. He was a total
mentsh.”
His daughters, Suzanne Gil-
denberg and Karen Saretsky, recall
their father always found a silver
lining or a break in the clouds.
They remembered that even the
day after learning he had cancer,
his positive attitude was unfailing.
Jules said, “I just found out I have
cancer, but the sun is shining; it’s
a gorgeous day and I just played a
great round of golf !”
Jules was born to Bella and Sam
Altman on June 6, 1931, in the
Coney Island section of Brooklyn.
Jules’ intellect brought him the
opportunity to move from his local
public high school (P.S. 100) to
Brooklyn Tech, a magnet school
specializing in math and science.
After the Altmans moved to join
Bella’s sister’s family in Detroit,
Jules graduated in 1949 from
Central High School.
He next enrolled in an acceler-
ated pharmacy program at Wayne
State University (WSU) and worked
in several pharmacies. He contin-
ued his education at the University
of Michigan Medical School, and
graduated in 1958. Jules completed
his dermatology residency at Mayo
Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He prac-
ticed dermatology on
the east side of Detroit,
later joined by his
son-in-law, Dr. Stuart
Gildenberg, and his
son, Dr. David Altman.
“Jules was a brilliant
dermatologist and tre-
mendously respected
by all of his peers,”
David Altman said.
“He was a giant in
the field, and it was an
honor to practice with
him,” Stuart Gildenberg
added.
Jules also was a longtime mem-
ber of the faculty at WSU Division
of Dermatology and a founding
member of the faculty for the
St. Joseph Mercy Dermatology
Residency Program, together with
his son and son-in-law. Jules is
credited with being the first to
describe and publish on several
dermatologic conditions.
St. Joseph Mercy dermatology
residents established an award
in his name — the Jules Altman
Teaching Award — that annu-
ally honors a faculty member “in
appreciation of their enthusiasm,
dedication and excellence in
teaching residents.” The award is
considered symbolic of Jules’ com-
mitment to academia, his stellar
reputation and his love of young
people and teaching. He retired at
age 83.
Jules was in medical school
when he met Deborah “Debbie”
Levine of Canada at a wedding.
A remarkable three dates and 10
days later, the couple married on
Aug. 21, 1956, at Congregation
Shaar Hashomayim in Windsor
and began their loving partner-
ship of more than 50 years. They
enjoyed family, friends, travel, art,
books and movies. Jules cared
tenderly for his wife when she
developed breast cancer. After
Debbie passed in January 2007, he
continued to talk about her as the
absolute love of his life.
