ADRIENNE
WORMSER
BALAGUR, for-
merly of New
York City and
Freeport, N.Y.,
passed away in
Royal Oak on
May 3, 2018, at
Balagur
the age of 101.
She was born
and raised in New York City,
daughter of Rosalia Weiss and
Auguste Gaston Wormser. She
graduated from the University
of North Carolina – Greensboro
with Phi Beta Kappa honors in
1938 and worked as a buyer at
Interstate and Macy’s depart-
ment stores.
She married Lester Balagur
on Aug. 29, 1945. They raised
four children on Long Island,
N.Y. Adrienne was an avid
bridge and Scrabble player and
loved to read. Her greatest joy
was her family, and she was
grateful her children chose to
spend time together as adults.
She loved to travel, often visit-
ing her children when they lived
abroad. A longtime resident
of Freeport, she moved to the
Detroit area at the age of 90
to be near her daughter Carol.
Using bridge, Scrabble and her
outgoing personality, she made
new friends who became a sec-
ond family for her.
Mrs. Balagur is survived by
her children, Richard Balagur
(Dottie Anderson), Linda
Zappulla, Carol Balagur and
Kenneth Balagur (Kim Reitz);
grandchildren, Matthew
Zappulla and Annie Balagur;
nieces and nephews. She was
the last of her generation and
will be greatly missed.
She was predeceased by her
husband of 38 years, Lester; her
brother, Andre Wormser; and
son-in-law, Robert Zappulla.
A celebration of her life was
held on May 8. Contributions
may be made to a local pub-
lic library or a charity of one’s
choice.
