On Sept. 6, 1970, four jet airliners
bound for New York City and one for
London were hijacked by members of
the Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine (PFLP).
Three aircraft were forced to land
at Dawson’s Field, a remote desert
airstrip near Zarqa, Jordan. On one of
the aircraft, however, El Al Flight 219
( from Amsterdam), the hijackers were
foiled.
Described by the New York Post as
the “only pilot to foil mid-air hijack-
ing,” El Al pilot Uri Bar-Lev, who had
flown as a 16-year-old in the 1948 War
of Independence and later during the
1956 War, managed, 29,000 feet up in
the sky, to overcome terrorists Patrick
Argüello and Leila Khaled, who were
operating on behalf of the terror orga-
nization PFLP.
Bar-Lev will share his incred-
