Archivist Jan Durecki
will be honored at 7 p.m.
Friday, May 11, at a classical
Reform Shabbat, including
the Temple Beth El Choir.
Durecki recently retired
after 12 years as director of
Durecki
the Rabbi Leo M. Franklin
Archives at the temple.
Durecki began her tenure at the
archives knowing almost noth-
ing of the Beth El story, says Suzi
MacWilliams, a volunteer at the
Franklin archives.
“Together we would excitedly find
a clue and have fun connecting the
Temple Beth Sholom
Rabbi Samuel Stahl of San Antonio,
son-in-law of the synagogue’s co-
founders Willard and Lois Cohodas.
Temple Beth Sholom is located at
223 Blaker St., Marquette. Parking is
available at the Episcopal Diocese
of Northern Michigan or the First
Methodist Church.

Scholnik at apsmd@aol.com. •
At the workshop, Potter will provide
resources and strategies to help stu-
dents who struggle with reading. She
will discuss how to support literacy
for students through the five building
blocks of reading: phonemic aware-
ness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and
text comprehension.
Founded and facilitated by the
Jewish Community Relations Council/
AJC (JCRC/AJC), the DJCL engages
volunteers from local Jewish organiza-
tions, impacting kindergarten through
fourth-grade students in schools in
Detroit and Oakland County through
tutoring, enrichment programs and
book drives. The DJCL conducts train-
ing workshops and provides resources
for its volunteer tutors. JCRC/AJC
board member Sue Birnholtz chairs
the DJCL.

dots,” MacWilliams says in an article
about Durecki in the Beth El Bulletin.
“Watching and learning from her
as she went on these history
adventures throughout the
community are memories I will
cherish forever. She dove into
our Jewish community whole-
heartedly, and everyone that
worked with her loved her.”
Duerecki said, “The most
compelling thing about the
collection is the wealth of
photographs. Ranging from
formal portraits to family shots, the
photographs capture the days of horse
and buggies to the 1950s. You see such
dramatic changes in clothing and
transportation; it’s just very fun!”
Laura Williams is the new curator
of the Franklin archives. •
