ELAN “MUTT” SCHWARTZ, 42, of
New Orleans, La., died Feb. 7, 2018.
Mr. Schwartz is survived by his
wife, Jo Starnes Schwartz; parents,
Karen and Moti Schwartz; broth-
ers and sisters-in-law, Jonathan
and Suzanne Schwartz, and Rabbi
Daniel and Elana Schwartz.
Interment was out of state.
Contributions may be directed
to any organization benefiting

ERWIN SIPORIN,
died Feb. 6, 2018.
A World War II
army veteran, he
was active with his
Regiment Alumni
Association of
the 143 Infantry.
Siporin
Throughout his
life, he was a Scout
Master, a member of the Pleasant
Lake Community, a lifetime mem-
ber of the Masons, a member of
Temple Israel, a volunteer with
World Medical Relief and was on
the Livonia Housing Commission.
He was also active with the
American Jewish Congress, taught
at Wayne State University and
was the president of the Oak Park
School Board. An expert on marble
and mausoleums, he helped build
mausoleums for the Archdiocese
throughout the country. He also
helped build Michigan State
University, University of Detroit
and University of Michigan. He was
known by all to be “a nice guy.”
He is survived by his children,
Michael Siporin and Carol Ekkens
of Rialto, Calif., Steven and Karen
Siporin of Huntington Woods, and
David Siporin and Tang Qian of
Evergreen, Colo.; grandchildren,
Dr. Lexi and Chris Bley, Liz Siporin,
Bobby Siporin and Liz Kirk, Kaylyn
and Ben Gootman, Ariana and
Sloan Williamson, and Michelle
Tang; great-grandchildren, Patrick
Bley and James Bley; also survived
by nieces and nephews; Tiki’s fam-
ily, including Ron and Sherry Loeb,
Joel and Sherry Gerendasy and
their families; and many friends.
He was the beloved husband of
the late Ruth Siporin; dear com-
panion of the late Tikvah “Tiki”
Gerendasy.
Interment was at Beth El

DR. THOMAS L.
SLOVIS, 76, of
Bloomfield Hills,
died Feb. 6, 2018.
A prolific author,
past president of
the Society for
Pediatric Radiology
Slovis
and longtime edi-
tor of the journal
Pediatric Radiology, Dr. Slovis
began his tenure as a radiologist at
Children’s in 1975 and was Chief of
Pediatric Imaging for 16 years.
Dr. Slovis published extensively in
the field, with more than 150 pub-
lications in peer-reviewed journals,
including Pediatric Radiology and
Pediatric Research. His research
focus was in radiation dosage with
a clinical interest in patient care in
pediatric radiology.
A 1967 graduate of University
of Pennsylvania Medical School,
Dr. Slovis earned honors and
awards throughout his lifetime,
as a student, a physician and fac-
ulty member. These recognitions
through the decades include the
Milton Haight Turk Memorial
Prize in the Humanities, Hobart
and William Smith Colleges, 1961;
Clinical Faculty Award, Wayne State
University School of Medicine Senior
Class for outstanding contribu-
tion to their clinical experience in
1979; Residents Teaching Award,
Radiology Department, 1986; Fellow,
American Institute of Ultrasound in
Medicine, 1993; Gold Medal Award,
the Society for Pediatric Radiology,
2005; and the Gold Medal, Michigan
Radiological Society, 2012, among
many others.
He received numerous university,
faculty and hospital appointments
and was a member of several major
professional societies, and national,
international, state and local boards
and committees.
Most of all, Dr. Slovis showed his
light of kindness, skill, compassion
and dedication to all who knew him.
He will be greatly missed.
