AT THE MOVIES
Opening Nov. 17: Justice League
features iconic DC Comic charac-
ters. Israeli actress Gal Gadot, 38,
who played the title role in Wonder
Woman, an uber-smash last summer,
returns as Diana/Wonder Woman.
Ezra Miller, 25, had a cameo as the
Flash in Batman v Superman (2016),
but League represents his real debut
in the part. On the “dark side”: Jesse
Eisenberg, 34, re-appears as baddie
Lex Luthor.
The plot is too complex to lay out
here, but here’s a fun footnote: Every
member of the (good guy) Justice
League, except Wonder Woman, was
created or co-created by a Jewish
writer (Batman, Superman, Aquaman,
the Flash and the Cyborg).
Saorise Ronan (Brooklyn) stars
as Marion, a senior attending a
Sacramento Catholic high school in
Lady Bird (the title comes from a nick-
name she gives herself to annoy her
middle-class parents). She’s desperate
to leave town for a more exciting place
like New York. Meanwhile, Marion has
high-school adventures that include
a romance with the school’s cool
iconoclast (Timothee Chalamet, 21).
Beanie Feldstein, 24 (Jonah Hill’s
sister) and Israeli-American actress
Odeya Rush, 20, have supporting
roles. Reviews have been very good.
Wonder is based on the best-selling
novel of the same name. August
“Auggie” Pullman (Jacob Tremblay)
is a young boy born with a facial
deformity and has been in and out of
hospitals for years. His mother (Julia
Roberts) and his father (Owen Wilson)
stand by him as he tries to fit in at
a new school, Beecher Prep. There,
Augie shows everyone he is just an
ordinary kid and that’s what matters is
on the inside.
Wonder is described in advance
publicity as a heartwarming comedy-
drama and if a trailer featuring Mandy
Patinkin, 64, is any guide, it lives up
to that description. Patinkin plays Mr.
Tushman, a funny, caring man who is
the principal of Beecher Prep. Upon
first meeting Auggie and his mother,
he makes them smile by telling them
what he’s had to put up with because
of his last name: “Hi, I’m Mr. Tushman
and I’ve heard it all: tushie, butt-
face, Mr. Tuchas.” Later in the trailer,
Tushman encapsulates in one line
his plan for Auggie: “He can’t change
the way he looks, but maybe we can
change the way we see.” Daveed
Diggs (Hamilton), 35, has a support-

ing role as Mr. Browne, a hip English
teacher who inspires his students,
including Auggie.
HALLOWEEN SURPRISE
You’re the Worst, an FXX cable series,
has gotten uniformly great reviews
since it premiered in 2014. It finishes
its fourth season on Nov. 17. This
sharply written comedy/drama co-
stars Aya Cash, 35, as a self-destruc-
tive PR executive who’s in an up-and-
down relationship with a self-involved
writer (Chris Geere).
The available biography on Cash
mostly concerned her non-Jewish
mother’s family (mother is a novelist;
grandmother was a tennis champ).
So, I was surprised when Cash told
Seth Meyers on Oct. 31 that she’s “a
Jewish kid.” Well, other recent video
interviews revealed that her father
is Jewish; she’s visited Israel; and
her husband, producer/writer Josh
Alexander, 43, is Jewish. •
