Flint, involve keeping at least one-
third of the collection on public view
after the initial exhibit and rotating
those pieces periodically.
“Flint has done a beautiful job of
housing the pieces,” Swidler says.
“They didn’t crowd them so each
one stands out on its own. I’m very
happy with the display.”
Interest in the Flint museum came
last year, after Swidler saw a ceram-
ics collection there. It had a different
orientation with pieces beyond ves-
sel forms. Those holdings included
all kinds of projects made out of
clay.
Although Swidler decided to limit
himself to the vessel form, he appre-
ciates various creative approaches
to works done in clay and thought it
would be nice to augment the other
collection with a collection like his.
He asked if museum administrators
would be interested and learned
there was considerable interest.
“I collected only vessels forms,
functional and non-functional,
because I knew I had to limit myself
in some way,” he explains. “I love

ceramic sculpture and would have
loved to have had some of it, but I
knew I was compulsive about buying
so I accepted limiting myself.”
Swidler let both museums pick
the items they wanted, and he is still
collecting.
As he holds on to some favorite
pieces and has met and learned
about the artists who completed
the pieces, Swidler is glad that he
ultimately was able to find two Rie
vessels to call his own.
Learning about Rie (nee Gomperz)
and her Jewish heritage, Swidler
thought about his own father, who
was thankful to come to America
because members of his own family
were lost in the Holocaust.
“I hope Flint museum visitors will
find the pieces I collected beautiful
or interesting at least,” Swidler says.
“What they get out of the exhibit
will be different for everyone.” •
