JN Memories: Israel
M
artin Luther King Day 2018
will mark my 20th year with
the Detroit Jewish News, the
first 13 as editor and the last seven as
contributing editor.
In 2011, during my
“bar mitzvah’’ year
with the JN, I chose to
whittle my hours, but
not my involvement
in Jewish Detroit. My
family roots here go
back to the late 19th
century.

moment of my associ-
ation with the JN, the
award-winning pub-
lication that Philip Slomovitz earnestly
built and Arthur Horwitz scrupulously
nurtured. Both approached the task
page by page, instinct by instinct.
At a time when many independent
Jewish publications have either been
shuttered outright or been absorbed by
their Jewish communal leadership, the
JN remains an example of how to inde-
pendently succeed in chronicling the
story of diaspora Jewish life while pro-
viding insight into Israel, the ancestral
Jewish homeland.
I’ve visited Israel many times on
behalf of the JN, but one journey that
was truly special occurred in April
2004 during Yasser Arafat’s second
Palestinian terrorist uprising. I was
traveling with my daughter, Elyse, then
19. She was the youngest traveler on
that Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit-hosted Miracle Mission IV.
We left Detroit en route to Ben-
Gurion International Airport a day
after Israel took out a Hamas leader
in an air strike. That targeted takeout
sent a shiver through our 600 mission-
goers, yet everyone stayed the course,
knowing the Jewish state needed our
embrace amid the drumbeat of terror.
Important as it is, standing with
Israel from the comfort of the West can-
not replace the unique benefit of stand-
ing shoulder-to-shoulder with Israelis
in deference to the land binding all Jews
and giving unifying soul to who we are
as people.
Reciting the Shehechyanu from the
Haas Promenade overlooking the Old
City before entering Jerusalem brings
you oh-so-closer to Torah, no mat-
ter your level of religious observance.
There’s no more exhilarating way to
ascend to Israel’s holiest, most awe-

Elyse Thakur, a clinical psychologist) at the

inspiring city than with a child or a
grandchild. Generation to generation —
so goes Jewish continuity.
Covering the mission for the JN, I
struggled to balance my work with time
for Elyse. A Northeastern University
freshman, she was aware of the poten-
tial for danger. Staying with me at the
hotel one morning so I could finish a
mission story for the JN, Elyse sensed
my concern when an Israeli cab driver,
trying to shave a few minutes so we
could meet up with our Federation bus,
drove too close to the border of the
West Bank, a disputed territory for Jews
and Arabs and beyond the perceived
safe zone.
I’ve made it my mission to stay true
to the Zionist ideals of Philip Slomovitz
and Arthur Horwitz. I’ve helped keep
the JN focused on telling readers why
Israel matters for Jews wherever they
live — and why Jewish diaspora support
is crucial to Israel in its roiling battle
against Islamist terror. Enduring trea-
ties with Egypt and Jordan give slight
hope for wider peace on Israel’s edgy
borders. •

Still No Reform Jewish
Educators At FJA
Our family read with interest Frankel
Jewish Academy’s announced attempt
to build bridges with the Reform com-
munity (“Community Reconnect,” Oct.
12, page 18). Unfortunately, the article
glosses over, or misstates, the facts.
There still are no Reform Jewish educa-
tors teaching any rabbinics or Bible
classes at FJA. Every rabbinics and Bible
class is currently taught by an Orthodox
or Conservative educator. There also
still are no Reform Jews hired to lead
any of the morning minyans.
Our family, along with more than
100 other FJA parents and alumni,
Federation leaders and local rab-
bis ( from all denominations), have
advocated, openly and behind the
scenes, for FJA’s leadership to change
its offensive hiring policy. Replacing
Rabbi Eric Grossman with Rabbi
Azaryah Cohen was a step in the right
direction.
But the same FJA leaders who hired
and supported Rabbi Grossman’s
refusal to hire Reform Jewish educa-
tors remain in control. Even since
Rabbi Cohen became head of school,
every new faculty member hired for
rabbinics or Bible positions was edu-
cated at either Orthodox yeshivot or
Conservative seminaries. Every new
board member is also from a tradi-
tional Jewish background.
We thank those interviewed at
FJA for admitting there is a “Reform
issue.” That is a first step to facilitating
change. As stated in the article, change
takes time. But do not confuse these
positive small steps with the end game.
Dialogue between the parents and the
board, as well as exit interviews with
parents, will help turn the current
claims made by FJA into reality.
We look forward to the day when
FJA’s religious studies faculty and min-
yan leaders actually include Reform
Jews.
Until then, FJA President’s dec-
laration that “the [Reform issue] is
history,” remains a false narrative.
Unfortunately, this is little more than
marketing spin designed to reverse
the trend of FJA’s declining student
enrollment by hoping to attract more
students from less traditional back-
grounds.
We thank the JN for exposing this
ongoing story about our community’s
only non-Orthodox Jewish high school.
We look forward to the day when FJA’s
actions truly mirror its words.

THE HERBAL SUPPLEMENT INDUSTRY
RECENTLY GOT CAUGHT WITH ITS PANTS DOWN!
The New York Attorney General conducted an
investigation on supplements sold at 4 national retailers
and what they found is more shocking than the latest
politician scandal! 4 out of 5 supplements not only
contain ZERO herbs — they also don't contain the main
ingredient/herb advertised on their label! No wonder
you hear people saying, "Supplements don't work!"
How can they when they don't have anything in them,
not even SYNTHETIC ingredients?

WHAT ABOUT PRESCRIPTION SUPPLEMENTS?
Mr. Ellison, former Biochemist for Big Pharma said:
“Big Pharma disguised as "nutritional supplement
makers" is selling bottles of toxic vitamins you don't
need. Instead of selling nutrients obtained from
nature, they make toxic counterfeits, and sell them
as “vitamins”, like Folic Acid and vitamin D, etc.
WHAT SUPPLEMENT BRANDS SHOULD WE BUY?
The best source can be found at: http://

passionate Biochemist volunteers.
Dr. Linus Pauling, twice winner of the Nobel Prize,
said: “The majority of all diseases could be traced to
nutritional defi ciencies.”
Nutrients can solve it all. There has been a nutrient
logic code since the 1900s that includes:
t7JUBNJO$DVSFTTDVSWZ
t7JUBNJO%DVSFTSJDLFUT
t/JBDJODVSFTQFMMBHSB
t5IJBNJODVSFTCFSJCFSJ
Not a single medication needed to treat
any of these illnesses!
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR BODY IS
DEFICIENT IN KEY NUTRIENTS?
Renowned researcher Dr. Bruce N Ames, American
Biochemist, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology Emeritus at the University of California,
Berkeley and a Senior Scientist at Children's
Hospital Oakland Research Institute says:
“We are starving! Even though we are all getting
fat, we are starving from vitamin and mineral
defi ciencies. You need a minimum of 15 vitamins
and 15 minerals(daily) that are cofactors for protein
that do some of your metabolism and if you don’t
get any one of these 30 Substances, You SHOULD
Die”. Did You Know This?
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
High quality daily supplementation is much more
important than you think. A defi ciency in just one
nutrient, calcium, it can cause 147 different diseases.

Next post we will be discussing what nutrients can help
prevent 82% of breast cancer, the #1 supplement that
causes brain seizure for kids, and how vitamin D, your
prescription vitamin, deposits calcium into the heart tissues
and not the bones. Dr. Joel K. Kahn, MD mentioned on PBS
that they’re fi nding increase amount of calcium deposits
around the heart tissue which is a silent killer!
Also, we’ll reveal the most dangerous ingredients
you’ll need to avoid at all times, used in many
supplements that you can buy at your local retailer.
