Music and dancing are key elements in bringing people of different
backgrounds together. More than 300 people enjoyed the sixth annual
Suburban-Urban Interfaith Unity Picnic Aug. 6 on Belle Isle.
Performers included Reb Steve Klaper and Brother Al Mascia of the
Song and Spirit Institute, and Baz Michaeli’s students from the Michigan
Center for Capoeira (tmc4c.com) did a lively demonstration of the Brazilian
martial art. There was much singing and many different musical perform-
ers; prayers from the Sikh, Muslim, Methodist, Unificationist and Jewish
traditions; and face-painting and games for the little ones. Teens enjoyed
soccer and drumming. Israeli dancing was led by Rabbi Dorit Edut. A
raffle raised funds for Vista Maria.
The event was organized by the Detroit Interfaith Outreach Network
in cooperation with other faith-based and civic organizations, including
the Association for Youth Empowerment, the Metro Family Church, the
Interfaith Leadership Council of Metro Detroit, the Islamic Organization of
North America, the United Methodist Church, CrimeStoppers of Southeast
Michigan and Pine Hill Congregational Church, among others. •
