The vigil will include readings,
music, short speeches, poetry and
candlelighting by multicultural and
inter-generational presenters. The
biographical readings and impetus
for this event have been provided
by HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid
Society).
The second part of the evening
will be food and conversation with
people from a wide variety of com-
munities — an opportunity to hear
of their experiences and perspec-
tives, to learn, to network, to make
plans for further actions. There will
be information available about edu-
cational and advocacy efforts cur-
rently planned or in progress.

On Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m., the
Birmingham Temple will present
“Remembering Refugees Past and
Present.”
Many are saddened, embarrassed,
outraged by the current refugee situ-
ation. Today, more than 65 million
people have been displaced from
their homes. The Jewish community,
because of its historical awareness,
is especially sensitive to this tragic
situation. We know what it is like to
seek refuge and what happens when
that refuge is denied.
The Birmingham Temple, through
this vigil, is inviting the community
to remember, speak out and go
beyond speech to action.
The evening will begin with a one-
hour program, remembering both
past refugees, through a memorial
to Jews on the S.S. St Louis who, in
1939, were turned away from the U.S.
and sent back to the Holocaust, and
