LANCE SABBAG
Filipino-Jewish Pop-Up
Aaron Egan
From 1937-41, about 1,200 European Jews fleeing the Nazis
found an unlikely new home: the Philippines. This little-
known chapter of World War II history will be recognized
though a special pop-up collaborative dinner between Sarap,
a pop-up that serves Filipino food, and Eastern Market Chef
Aaron Egan at 6 p.m. Monday, April 24, at Eastern Market
Shed 5. It’s also a way to highlight how food can bring cul-
tures together and be a catalyst for conversation. Chef Egan’s
menu was inspired by imagining what life would be like for
a Jewish refugee newly arrived in the Philippines. $50. Make
reservations at sarapdetroit.com.•
