Jack Adler
c. 1940s

ack Adler, 95, of Oak Park,
passed away peacefully on Jan. 4,
2017, at the home of his daugh-
ter Sue, in Emeryville, Calif.
He lived through many tragic
events and difficulties, but he always
maintained a positive attitude and
kept moving forward.
A native of Germany, Jack fled
to England with his father after
escaping from the Nazis. There he
met and married Betty Einhorn,
who had arrived from Germany via
Kindertransport. Jack and Betty both
eventually worked in London for the
U.S. Army.
Immediately following the war,
Jack was sent to Germany wearing
a U. S. Army uniform in search of
Nazis. While there, he returned to
his hometown of Kassel, where he

He is survived
by his daughters

Terrell, Hannah
Bitterman, Beth Bitterman and
David Tushman; son, Sheldon
Bitterman; grandchildren, Ken
(Marlene) Hall, Jennifer (Kate)
Thomson, David (Anayanci)

Belknap, Benjamin Tushman;
great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nick,
Sam, Zeke. He is also survived by
his longtime companion, Byna
Camden; and many other loving
family members and friends.
Mr. Bitterman was the beloved
husband of the late Henrietta
Bitterman.
Interment was held at the Hebrew
Memorial Park Cemetery in Clinton
Township. Contributions may be
made to Yad Ezra or to a charity
of one’s choice. Arrangements by
Dorfman Chapel.

found two of his sisters along with
his mother amidst the rubble of their
former home. They had survived
the concentration camp together
and, with Jack’s help, were sent to
Australia to be reunited with his
father, who had been relocated there
by the British.
In 1949, Jack and Betty moved to
the United States, eventually settling
in Detroit, where they both found
employment with the public natural
gas utility. Jack devoted himself to
his wife and children throughout his
career there, eventually retiring in
1980.
After Betty died and the children
were grown, Jack focused on athletic
activities, including cycling, tennis,
cross-country skiing, swimming, sail-
ing and yoga. He was active with the

American Youth Hostels cycling club,
Israeli folk dancing groups, interna-
tional folk dancing clubs and several
other organizations.
Jack’s many other interests includ-
ed history, current events, art, music,
reading, gardening and travel. He had
great enthusiasm and energy for life
and was an inspiring role model for
his children as well as many others.
He is survived by his children, Sue
and Alan; daughter-in-law, Diane;
grandchildren, Kim, Isaac and
Sam; great-grandchildren, Elia and
Cayson; sister, Paula of Melbourne,
Australia; many nieces and nephews
in Israel as well as Australia.
A memorial service will be held in
Detroit this summer. Contributions
may be made to a charity of one’s
choice. •

101, of West

Feb. 6, 2017.
She is sur-
vived by her son,

Farmington Hills;
daughter and son-
in-law, Carol (Marty) Ginsberg of
Monsey, N.Y.; 12 loving grandchil-
dren; 37 loving great-grandchildren;
four loving great-great-grandchil-
dren; other loving family members.
Mrs. Fishman was the beloved

wife of the late Edward Fishman;
devoted mother and mother-in-law
of the late Ilene and the late Richard
Karson, the late Diane Fishman;
dear sister and sister-in-law of the
late Michael and the late Freda
Bromberg, the late Sam and the late
Florence Bromberg.
Contributions may be made to
Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy
Network, 6555 W. Maple Road, West
Bloomfield, MI 48322; or to a char-
ity of one’s choice. Interment was
held at Machpelah Cemetery in
Ferndale. Arrangements by Hebrew
Memorial Chapel.
