T

also participate in cultural and social
activities and do community service
work, called JCC Cares.
Scholarships are available for Detroit athletes and artists,
who will have practice sessions, community service and get-
togethers locally before leaving for their host site.
Detroit delegations will fly to Birmingham and Miami.
While the sponsoring JCC Association requires an 8-to-1 par-
ticipant-to-adult ratio for delegations at the Maccabi Games,
Detroit’s ratio is generally much smaller. Housing arrangements
are handled by the host community.
Family members can attend the Maccabi Games by purchas-
ing spectator passes on www.MaccabiDetroit.com. Scholarship
information also is on the website.
Silver can be reached at (248) 505-9007 or francisilver27@
gmail.com. Gordon can be reached at (248) 561-3329 or
karengordon44@icloud.com.
On a related note, Silver said, “It’s 99 percent certain” Detroit
will host the Maccabi Games again in 2019. “So please think
about being a volunteer or host family,” she said.
Detroit previously was a Maccabi Games host in 1984, 1990,
1998, 2008 and 2014. It was the only site in 1984 and 1990, when
the Maccabi Games were held every two years. •
