MIRIAM YETTA
RUBENSTEIN, 88, of
Oak Park, died Dec.
13, 2016.
She was born in
Teltz, Lithuania. Her
father, Itzhak, was
a chemist, and her
Rubenstein
mother, Shifra, stayed
at home. The local
Jewish community
tried to save Miriam
because her great-
grandfather was the
Baal Shem Tov of
Lithuania.
At first, the family
lived in the country-
side and Miriam
was sent to be with her aunt. Later, she

returned to her mother. As German
soldiers came to their yard, someone
grabbed Miriam and her mother at the
back door and they left. Their house
was set ablaze with benzene; Miriam’s
little sister died in the fire. The Germans
grabbed her father. Miriam and her
mother traveled at night through places
she does not remember and later took a
boat to join an aunt in Pittsburgh.
Miriam met her loving husband by
chance when he traveled with a friend
and stopped in Pittsburgh on the way
to New York. He didn’t continue his trip
after meeting Miriam. They were married
after that one meeting.
Throughout her life, Miriam was
involved with the Holocaust Memorial
Center and the Children of Holocaust
Association in Michigan.
She is survived by her children, Tzvi
and Rochel Rubenstein, Bernard and
Lisa Rubenstein, Sophia and Shmuel
Goodman, Toba Rubenstein, David
Rubenstein and Julie Stulberg, Celia
“Sarah” and Yerachmiel Shaw, and
Hannah and Barry Novick; 30 treasured
grandchildren; 12 adoring great-grand-
children.
Mrs. Rubenstein was the beloved wife
for more than 55 years of the late Morris
Rubenstein.
Interment was at Hebrew Memorial
Park Cemetery. Contributions may be
made to the Holocaust Memorial Center
or CHAIM. Arrangements by Hebrew
Memorial Chapel.
