GLADYS ALLEN, 95,
of Bloomfield Hills,
died Dec. 3, 2016.
She was very active
with Congregation
Beth Achim, its sister-
hood and the Kiddish
program; she then
Allen
became active with
Congregation Beth
Ahm and its sisterhood.
She even attended last week’s Shabbat
service.
Mrs. Allen is survived by her daugh-
ters and sons-in-law, Terry and Stanley
Schwartz of Delray Beach, Fla., Elayne
and Barry Moss of Southfield; brother
and sisters-in-law, Alvin Stilman and
Renee Luby Stilman, Ann Robinson;
grandchildren, Lee and Bonnie
Schwartz, Melissa and Jon Zeidman,
Hilary Moss and Julien Bouvier, Jeremy
Moss; great-grandchildren, Scott, Marc,
Noah, Julia; loving nieces, nephews and
a world of friends; caregivers, Dyetta,
Diane, Lucy and Lola.
Mrs. Allen was the beloved wife of
the late Teddy Allen; dear sister and
sister-in-law of the late Beacie Stein,
and the late Honey and the late Mike
Weingarden.

HARRY BALK, 91, of
Oak Park, died Dec. 3,
2016.
He was a music legend
in the Motown scene.
Among his accomplish-
ments were forming
Twirl Records and
Balk
Impact records as well as
c. 1960
a publishing company,
Gomba.
At the 2013 Detroit Music Awards,
Harry received the Distinguished
Achievement Award for his body of work
in the music industry.
Mr. Balk is survived by Vicky (Devlin
Burton) Howard, Scott (Summer) Howard,
London Howard, Harper Howard, Beverly
(Terry) Van Wagoner and Jeffrey Schweig.
Mr. Balk was the beloved husband of
the late Patti Jerome; cherished brother
of Faygie (the late Myer) Bloom, the late
Frieda (the late Buddy) Schweig and the
late Rose (the late Al) Sherman. Other
family members include the family of
Patti Jerome: the late Sandra McCallister,
Nanea Reeves, the late Vicki Reeves, Laura
McCallister and Lelya.

HAROLD BARMAN, 94, of Brighton,
died Dec. 1, 2016.
A veteran of foreign wars, Mr. Barman
was a member of the Jewish War
Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years,
Evelyn Barman; sons and daughters-
in-law, Alan and Judith Barman of
Farmington Hills, Mitchell and Madylen
“Dede” Barman of New Hudson,
Norman and Kim Barman of Brighton;
many loving grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
Mr. Barman was the loving father of
the late Linda Barman; dear brother and
brother-in-law of the late Nathan and
the late Hilda Barman, the late Pearl and
the late Jack Rhinestone.

Schultz and Gary Schulz; sister, Lee
Kepes; 11 grandchildren; six great-
grandchildren; many loving nieces,
nephews, other loving family members
and friends.
Mr. Brickner was the brother-in-law of
the late Stewart Kepes; the father of the
late Diane Brickner; the brother of the
late Sidney (late Rachel) Brickner.

of one’s choice. Interment took place at
the Temple Israel Gardens of Beth El
Memorial Park Cemetery in Livonia.

PHILIP CAPLAN of Highland Park,
N.J., passed away Nov. 11, 2016, follow-
ing a prolonged illness.
Born and raised in Detroit, Philip was
the son of Abraham and Ida (Keidan)
Caplan and grandson of Abba and
Channah Keidan.
He moved to the New Jersey Shore
area in the 1950s with his bride, Iola. An
inspired research physicist, Mr. Caplan
was among the circle of scientists and
mathematicians who advanced commu-
nications and innovative technologies
at Camp Evans and Fort Monmouth.
He authored numerous articles, and
co-authored a book, Spectroscopic
Calculations for a Multielectron Ion.
Privately, Philip was a lifelong teacher
and scholar of Jewish topics; he pub-
lished two books, including The Puzzle
of the 613 Commandments and Why
Bother?
Philip Caplan was widely beloved and
respected.
He leaves behind his loving wife,
Iola; his children, Hannah (Harold),
Benjamin (Orit), Joshua (Naomi) and
Jonathan (Lori); and many grandchil-
dren and great-grandchildren.
RAYA CZERKASSKI,
95, of Dearborn
Heights, died Nov. 30,
2016.
She worked as a
teacher till she was
80 and taught several
languages. She received
Czerkasski
many awards for teach-

ing throughout her
career.
Mrs. Czerkasski is
survived by her daugh-
ter and son-in-law,
Barbara and Jon Kaner
of Prescott.
Mrs. Czerkasski was
the beloved wife of the
late Ilia Czerkasski;
loving daughter of the late Fanya and
the late Aaron Rubinczyk; dear sister of
the late Avrohom Rubinczyk. She had
many cherished siblings and other fam-
ily members murdered in the Sosenki
Forest during the Holocaust.
Contributions may be made to a
children’s education fund. Services
and interment were held at Beth
Tefilo Emanuel Cemetery in Ferndale.

GERALD EMMER, 82,

nephews.
Mr. Galper was the loving brother
of the late Raymond Galper; the dear
brother-in-law of the late Adele Galper
and the late Gerald Rosen.
