ccording to the National
Institute of Mental Health,
20 percent of Americans
under age 18 live with or have expe-
rienced a seriously debilitating men-
tal disorder. The lack of community-
based groups in Metro Detroit to
support parents and youth caregivers
intensifies the need to fill this void.
The Stephen H. Schulman
Millennium Fund for Jewish Youth
recently provided a grant to Kadima
to create a new pilot program called
Complete Family Wellness. Kadima
is a Southfield-based nonprofit pro-
viding comprehensive residential,
therapeutic and social services to all
people with mental health needs.
In partnership with Kadima,
Adat Shalom Synagogue will host
a monthly educational workshop
series for parents to provide men-
tal health education and support.
Brooke Bendix, LMSW, along with
Rabbi Rachel Shere or Rabbi Aaron
Bergman, will facilitate.
The first workshop, “Anxiety
and Worries: Childhood through
Adolescence,” will be 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 1. Running through
June 6, 2017, the workshops will
include topics such as “The Baby
Blues: A Look into Postpartum
Depression” and “Navigating
Frenemies, Enemies, Bullies and
Cyberbullies in the Teen Years.”
The program is designed to
increase knowledge and awareness
of resources available in the com-
munity, while reducing feelings of
isolation.
The workshops and partner-
ship stemmed from a talk between
Kadima’s Clinical Director Jean
Nemenzik and Rabbi Shere.
“Parents would come to me for
guidance and resources for mental
health issues, and we realized there
was a great need for additional sup-
port for these families,” Shere said.
“A vital part of Kadima’s mission
includes education and outreach to
the community,” said Eric Adelman,
Kadima executive director. “This
partnership is one of many efforts
Kadima will make to encourage
conversation, disseminate accurate
information and encourage people to
explore concerns about the health of
their families.”
All sessions are free and will be at
Adat Shalom in Farmington Hills. To
register and for session details, call
Brooke Bendix at (248) 733-4899 or
email brookeb@kadimacenter.org.
