SYLVIA BABCOCK,
103, of Southfield, died
Sept. 3, 2016.
She was a vice
president of the Jewish
Community Center,
where she was involved
with Book Fair. She
Babcock
was on the advisory
board for the Jewish
Historical Society and
was involved in Woman’s Philanthropy,
the Annual Campaign and the archives
of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. She was a member of Temple
Beth El and of the National Council of
Jewish Women.
Mrs. Babcock was the cherished moth-
er of Nancy (Jim) Grosfeld and Robert
Babcock; loving grandma Sylvia of Dr.
Rachel Kukes (Dr. Mark) Schwartz, Jared
Babcock, Joseph Babcock and Jason
(Jenna) Grosfeld; proud great-grandma
Sylvia of Benjamin, Jonathan and Julia
Schwartz, Jay, Alex and Janie Grosfeld.
She is also survived by many loving
nieces, nephews, friends; devoted care-
givers, Gina Delacruz, Comfort Nuamah
and Fina Belarosa.
She was the beloved wife of the late
Samuel Babcock. Sylvia was the last
of 13 children born to Joseph and
Rachel Barnett; her deceased siblings
and their spouses are Frances and Jack
Fink, Rose and Ed Rosenberg, Bea and
Sam Magidsohn, Dorothy and Ellis
Thal, Archie and Laura Barnett, Sidney
and Golda Barnett, Celia and Nate
Blumrosen and David Goldfarb, Ethel
and David Goldfarb, Harriet and Samuel
Silver, Lillian and Bob Moore, Maurice
and Marianne Barnett, Marvin and
Evelyn Barnett. She was the daughter-
in-law of the late Lottie and the late
Benjamin Babcock; sister-in-law of the
late Rose (the late Dr. John) Horowitz,
the late Tillie (the late Harry) Madison,
and the late Ann (the late Gene)
Finegold.
Interment was at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be

LESTER BERMAN, 68,
of Southfield, died Aug.
14, 2016.
A civil engineer
and consultant, Mr.
Berman assisted eight
states with environ-
mental planning as a
Berman
regional officer. He
was also a college pro-
fessor who taught at
Lawrence Tech, Baker College, Wayne
State University, Phoenix University and
Davenport University.
He was an active member of Adat
Shalom Synagogue and its men’s club. He
remained active with Ahavath Shalom
Congregation in Fort Worth, Texas, and
with the Jewish War Veterans.
Mr. Berman is survived by his wife
of 45 years, Francine Berman; son and
daughter-in-law, Nathaniel and Rena
Berman of Brighton, Mass.; daughter,
Carolyn Berman of Southfield; sister,
Ellen Berman; grandchildren, Devorah
Berman, Rivkah Berman.

the late Louise Band; devoted daughter of
the late Louis and the late Mary Lazarus;
