NEW MERCHANDISE
ARRIVING DAILY
Ice Hockey
Debuts At
Maccabi
Steve Stein | Contributing Writer
Dylan Resnick is captain of the first
Detroit Maccabi ice hockey team.
Michael Potocsky, Miles Berlin, Ryan
Berke and Spencer Blatt.
Nate Resnick, Ira Schlussel and Ethan
Weinfeld are assistant coaches.
Joining the Detroit team in Stamford
will be two teams from Toronto
along with teams from Philadelphia,
Washington, D.C., Long Island, Ft.
Lauderdale, Los Angeles, San Francisco
and Orange County, Calif.
Each team will play four pool games
Monday, Aug. 8, and Tuesday, Aug.
9. Detroit will meet Philadelphia,
Sid Jacobson JCC (Long Island), Fort
Lauderdale and East Bay JCC (San
Francisco area).
The teams will be seeded No. 1-12
after pool play. The top four teams each
will receive a bye in the first round of
bracket competition.
Four games between the remaining
eight teams Wednesday, Aug. 10, will
set up quarterfinal games later that day.
Semifinals, championship and third-
place games will be played Thursday,
Aug. 11, with gold, silver and bronze
medal winners determined.
Games will be no checking because of
the age range of the players.
So how did ice hockey join the
Maccabi Games’ roster of sports?
Cohen said Stamford doesn’t have a
venue for inline hockey and is an ice
hockey community, so discussions began
about offering ice hockey instead of
inline hockey in Stamford.
As it turned out, ice hockey is essen-
tially replacing inline hockey, a longtime
Maccabi Games sport, this year. Inline
hockey won’t be held at any of the three
Maccabi Games sites. The other sites are
Columbus, Ohio, and St. Louis.
“Now that we’ve got ice hockey start-
ed, I see it growing as a Maccabi Games
sport,” Ehrlich said. “It’s all U16 this year.
It would be great to add a U14 division
and a girls’ division, too.”
Stamford also is hosting ArtsFest.
About 1,500 youngsters will be com-
peting in sports and participating in
ArtsFest in the community, located
about 35 miles from New York City.

t’s safe to say ice hockey has exploded
onto the JCC Maccabi Games scene.
Twelve teams — including one
from Detroit — and more than 200 play-
ers ages 12-16 from across the United
States and Canada will compete in ice
hockey next week in Stamford, Conn.,
in the sport’s first year at the Maccabi
Games.
The Maccabi Games began in 1983
and have been held almost every year
since then.
“We’ve been blown away by the inter-
est in ice hockey. We had no idea this
many Jewish kids played the sport,” said
Marla Cohen, communications man-
ager for the New York City-based JCC
Association, which oversees the Maccabi
Games along with the Maccabi World
Union.
“Everyone has been pleasantly
surprised by the turnout,” said Steve
Ehrlich, ice hockey commissioner for the
Maccabi Games in Stamford.
Mark Weiss is coach of the Detroit ice
hockey team. He has 18 players on his
roster, the maximum allowed.
“We had to cut players; 30 players
showed interest in joining our team,” he
said.
Ten forwards, six defensemen and
two goalies will represent Detroit in
Stamford.
Three lines have been put together
plus a “floating” forward, Weiss said.
There are three defensive pairs and the
goalies will alternate games. Team try-
outs and practices have been held at the
Farmington Hills Ice Arena.
“What’s great is we have kids from all
over the area and all skill levels … travel,
high school and house teams,” Weiss
said. “We have the talent to compete in
Stamford, but we know this will be a
challenging tournament.”
Detroit’s captain is forward Dylan
Resnick, 15, a sophomore at Groves High
School in Beverly Hills.
“It was an easy decision for me to
name Dylan our captain,” Weiss said.
“He’s a team leader. He helps our team
be a team.”
Also on the Detroit roster are Blake
Salesin, Cameron Young, Daniel Zalesin,
Eric Gal, Gabe Barish, Gabe Schlussel,
Henry Schwartz, Isaac Mintz, Jeremy
Kahan, Jonah Greenblatt, Marcus
Frankel, Matt Segall, Matthew Jasgur,
