ebra Kapen passed away
on Monday, June 13, at the
age of 56. She was at home,
surrounded by her loving daughters,
Kayla and Leah, and husband, Udi.
Debi bravely battled
a multitude of health
issues for most of her
life, including three
bouts with cancer. In
recent years, she waged
a battle against sarcoid-
osis.
Debi was born in
Manhattan, N.Y., in
1959. She subsequently
lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., Debi Kapen
Bowie, Md., and sev-
eral places in California
before moving to Metro Detroit. She
attended the University of Maryland
and graduated from Hillcrest
Nursing School in San Diego, Calif.,
in 1980. She worked as a nurse for
several years. She also worked for
several years as a weight-loss con-
sultant for Nutri-System and Jenny
Craig.
Debi married Neil Schloss in 1982.
They had one daughter together,
Leah Schloss, in 1987.
She married Dr. Udi Kapen in
1995. Their daughter, Kayla Kapen,
was born in 1996.
Debi’s artistic talents were many
and varied. She was a talented pia-
nist. She loved painting and sketch-
ing. Her and Udi’s home, which she
helped design as it was being built,
was decorated with examples of
her artwork. She created beautiful
sailor’s valentines from seashells. She
amassed a vast collection of min-
iatures over the last several years.

GOLDSTEIN passed
away peacefully on
June 18, 2016, after a
severe illness.
She was born in
Goldstein
Detroit on April 4,
1933, to Harry and
Henrietta Palmer.
Always an optimist, she remained
hopeful, joyful, loving and kind. She
delighted in being with people, exercising
with other seniors and dancing with her
dearest friend, Andrew.
Always a generous person, Madeleine
was a cheerleader when you were down,
an adviser when you needed help and a
loving soul when you needed a hug. Her

Among her friends, she was
known her entire life for being a
source of wisdom and
insight and for having
a sympathetic ear, even
in the midst of her own
serious health problems.
Debi Kapen is sur-
vived by her loving
husband of 20 years,
Udi Kapen; daughters,
Kayla Kapen of West
Bloomfield, Leah Schloss
of Washington, D.C.;
parents, Barbara and
Don Mills; sister and
brother-in-law, Michelle and Marty
Gordon of Israel; brother, Daniel
Block of Florida; mother-in-law,
Rachel Kapen; sisters-in-law and
brothers-in-law, Gilead and Karen
Kapen, Alon and Amal Kapen,
Avi Kapen; nieces and nephews,
Sarah and Yoni Yacobovitch, Joseph
Gordon, Rome Kapen, Michaela
Kapen, Alia Kapen, Matan Kapen,
Simon Kapen, Caleb Kapen.
She was the loving daughter of the
late Abraham Block, and the dear
daughter-in-law of the late Sheldon
Kapen.
Interment was at Clover Hill
Park Cemetery in Birmingham.

Madeleine is survived by her brother,
Robert, and his wife, Miriam, of Norfolk,
Va., who idolized her; two nephews,
Adam and Alex Palmer; adoring cousins,
including cousin Anita Greene’ s two
children, Marissa and Mayci, to whom
she was “grandma;” her dearest friend,
Andrew Schwartz; countless other
friends; many cherished first cousins.
She was a special person beloved by all
who knew her and who bravely endured
losses of her husband, Richard, and her
two daughters, Cheryl and Stefani.
The family is planning a memorial ser-
vice in Detroit for later this summer.
