FOR MOREL LOVERS
There’s good news out of Lansing this week
for amateur morel hunters. The Michigan
House of Representatives has voted to
repeal the certification requirement for
both picking and selling the mushrooms.
The law has spent just a year on the books,
part of a broader mushroom food safety
program that required a costly certification
course.
If HB 5582 is passed by the Senate and
signed by the governor, the morel will
go on the list of food items exempt from
required food safety training, over argu-
ments from the Michigan Department of
Agriculture that without proper training
there’s a risk of both illness and death
from fake morels. Even if the requirement
is repealed, restaurants will still be allowed
to purchase only from vendors with the
proper training and certification.
