Silverman on Late Night

SPECIAL
FOR TWO

She has a lot riding on this new show.
The 10-episode NBC series Emerald
City, a reworking of the Wizard of Oz sto-
ries, is set to premiere some “unknown”
time this year. The (London) Jewish
Chronicle just profiled Roxy Sternberg,
27, who has a big part. Sternberg is the
daughter of a black Ugandan Jewish
mother and a British (white) Jewish
father; she teaches classes at her U.K.
synagogue. (Look for more on her when
the show starts). Another biracial Jew,
rapper Drake, 29, was in the news last
week when he confessed on Late Night:
Seth Meyers that he had a crush on Sarah
Silverman, 45. Silverman appeared with

Meyers the next day and first attributed
Drake’s crush to a “Jewish mother fantasy,”
but then quickly changed gears — and
vamped, “I’m a sexual being.”
This is worlds away from 50 years
ago when the only black Jew anyone
knew was Sammy Davis Jr. and black
men didn’t talk about crushes on white
women. Also, this year, two biracial Jews
(Sophie Okonedo and Daveed Diggs)
are Tony-nominated for playing white
historical characters. I love the fact that
“white” roles are opening up for black
actors. After all, WASPs have been playing
biblical Jews forever.
