C
hloe Roslin and Tori
Weingarten are outstanding
competitive figure skaters
with impressive resumes.
Competition will take a back seat,
however, for the 16-year-old sophomores
at Bloomfield Hills High School when
each performs as a soloist June 9-12 in
the 17th annual Detroit Skating Club ice
show
Skating Across America.
Being a soloist in the show is a big
deal. Soloists are chosen through audi-
tions, and a skater must be at a certain
skill level to audition.
Roslin is a seven-time regional medal-
ist and two-time regional champion.
She was the 2015 Eastern Great Lakes
Region Novice Ladies champion and
2016 Eastern Great Lakes Region Junior
Ladies champion.
Her mother, Sophia Roslin, said her
daughter loves to compete and perform
but there are other reasons why she loves
to skate.
There
s the satisfaction of mastering
new challenges, the ability to express
herself creatively on the ice, the pride in
being accomplished and successful in
her chosen sport and the important life
skills skating has taught her,
she said.
These are sportsmanship, grace under
pressure, the value of work hard and per-
severance, and the ability to win and lose
with grace and poise.
It
s not easy to pick yourself up after a
fall and continue competing in front of
an arena full of spectators and a panel of
judges, Sophia Roslin said.
That
s a skill that will serve my
daughter well in many contexts through-
out her life,
she said.
Weingarten has won gold medals in
regional and sectional competitions and,
like Roslin, has competed at the national
level.
Her dream is to be national- or world-
level skater in freestyle, and apparently
nothing is going to stop her from pursu-
ing the goal.
She said she
s grown about 7 inches
and recovered from a stress fracture in
her back over the past few years, but
I haven
t given up on my dream. I
ve
learned to be patient, and I
m happy to
be fully recovered and back to full train-
ing.
Figure skating is an intense sport, she
said.
There
s nothing like the feeling of
achieving a clean program after working
so hard,
she said.
Even if I don
t achieve
national or world levels, I know skating
has helped build my confidence and
brought me tons of enjoyment.
The ice show will be at 7 p.m.
Thursday, June 9; 7 p.m., Friday, June
10; 7 p.m., Saturday, June 11; and 2 p.m.
Sunday, June 12. For tickets, go to
dscclub.com. Detroit Skating Club is
at 888 Denison Court in Bloomfield
Township, west of Franklin Road.
