Photography was her next interest,
and she went on to earn a master’s
degree in fine arts at Wayne State
University, where she learned diverse
skills. Returning to teaching interests
but keeping them in the art world,
Soberman was hired by the College of
Creative Studies to cover fine-art pho-
tography.
“I’ve always been interested in his-
tory, and I love to research the back-
ground of ideas,” she says. “That’s for
my serious work.”
Beyond Jewish issues, she also
explores the plight of the disadvantaged.
In her piece Women and
Architectural Objects, recently shown
in an exhibit at the Carr Center in
Detroit, Soberman employs two-
dimensional and three-dimensional
prints to call attention to the back-
ground roles women have endured in
building design.
Soberman likes to keep teaching,
and she does that through workshops
offered by art centers in the United
States and Mexico.
Her jewelry has been shown in both
countries. Locally, the wearables have
been seen at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek through its Woman’s World
event, Birmingham Bloomfield Art
Center and the Detroit Gallery of
Contemporary Crafts.
“When I’m assembling necklaces,
I often think of how they would look
against a black background — in other
words, the ever-classic black dress,”
says Soberman, whose jewelry is avail-
able through her website. “I think each
piece of jewelry makes a statement on
its own.”
