Jim Berk, now a personal trainer and
exercise teacher who works often in
retirement homes, won a silver medal at
the National Senior Games in
Minneapolis.
Berk finished second in the
100-yard breaststroke swim-
ming event in the men's ages
60-64 division at the University
of Minnesota Aquatic Center,
timed in 1:22.02.
He brought his medal to his
exercise classes to drive home
one of his strong beliefs.
"I'm always saying that with practice
and diligence, you can achieve so much in
life he said. "It doesn't have to be compet-
ing in a sport. It can be simply walking or
moving around:'

BRIEFLY
• Sophomore third baseman Max
Rosenfeld battled .402 with 37 hits, 34
RBIs, seven doubles and three homers for
the Oakland Activities Association Blue
Division champion Bloomfield Hills High
School baseball team.
• Walled Lake Northern High School
three-sport athlete Jordan Anstandig
decided to play baseball at Saginaw Valley
State University. Anstandig earned nine
varsity letters at WL Northern, three each
in football, snowboarding and baseball.
• Western Michigan University junior
pitcher Gabe Berman was named to the
Jewish Sports Review's Division I All-
American Baseball Team for the third
straight year. Berman was 5-3 with a 2.68
ERA and seven saves in 25 games for the
Broncos.
• Denny Brenner of Waterford, an
umpire in the InterCongregational
Men's Club Summer Softball League for
many years, died at age 82. Brenner was
honored by the league in 2011 when he
retired from umpiring league games.
• Zach Homer of Franklin played for the
Detroit Jr. Red Wings in the 25th annual
Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament in
Edmonton. The tournament is for elite
players in the 10-and-under age group.
• Mitch Kline from Congregation Shir

Tikvah won the InterCongregational Men's
Club Summer Softball League's Jeff Fox
Sportsmanship Award.
• Temple Shir Shalom won the
InterCongregational Men's Club Summer
Softball League championship, its 11th
win in the league's 20-year history
• Zeiger won the B'nai B'rith softball
league championship, and Lyle Schaefer
and Howard Genser won the B'nai B'rith
golf league title.
• Alex Weberman of West
Bloomfield was presented the
B'nai B'rith softball league's
Michael Yendick Pure Heart
Award:'• Alex Mison, Haley
Whelan, Melanie Taylor and Sloan
Lemberg of Detroit won 11 med-
als in dance at the JCC Maccabi
Games in Milwaukee. Also in
Milwaukee, Detroit's short-handed
roller hockey team, with just six skaters,
won a silver medal; and Detroit's Nia Kepes
and Aviva Lupovitch joined with girls from
Ann Arbor and Boca Raton, Fla., to win a
gold medal in volleyball.
• The Detroit softball team won its
second straight JCC Maccabi Games gold
medal, this time in in Fort Lauderdale,
Fla. Detroit swimmers won 13 medals.
• Weightlifter Jeff Ellis, 56, from West
Bloomfield won a gold medal in the 198-
pound division in the 55-59 age group at
the Michigan Senior Olympics.
• Bicyclist Mark Cahn, football player
Dale Katz and racquetball player Karen
Green Simon were inducted into the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
• The Jeters won their second straight
InterCongregational Men's Club Summer
Softball League fall season championship.
• Coach Mark Weiss' Farmington Hills
Jaguars youth hockey team held a hockey
equipment drive for the fourth year for
the MORC (Macomb-Oakland Regional
Center) Stars hockey program.
• It was Chanukah Night at a Detroit
Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena in
an event co-sponsored by the Chabad of

Greater Downtown Detroit.
• Michigan State University womeris

soccer player Sarah Kovan was named
a 2016 Rhodes Scholar. She's the 17th
Rhodes Scholar from MSU since the
scholarships were first awarded in 1904.
• Matt Dery was named the new co-
host of a midday sports talk show on
WMGC 105.1 FM. *
