How many pairs of reading glasses do
you have lying around the house and you
still can't find one when you need one? I
can relate!
For several weeks, I have been test
driving a pair of ThinOPTICS readers.
They are housed in a thin, hard plastic
case affixed to the back of my smart-
phone case where they are ready when-
ever I need them.
The readers are ultra-light, flexible
and rest on your nose like a butterfly.
Friends have spied them enviously when
I whip them out and then flex them
slightly to return them to their case.
ThinOPTICS were invented by Israeli
Teddy Shalon of Palo Alto, Calif., who
was on a long bike ride with a friend
who was frustrated because he'd forgot-
ten his reading glasses and couldn't read
a text message. The idea to put reading
glasses on cell phones came to Shalon
during the next 20 miles of riding.

He and his team used their biomedi-
cal and Silicon Valley expertise to make
glass frames using materials such as the
super-elastic metal alloy used for heart
stents paired with incredibly thin, bullet-
proof-strong polycarbonate lenses.
The glasses, starting at $24.95, come
in various colors and three strengths,
with a lifetime guarantee that warrants
your glasses against defects, workman-
ship and failures under normal use for-
ever. All that, and you can read the fine
print, too. Visit thinoptics.com. *

Orly Gottesman, a Cordon Bleu-
trained pastry chef living in Sydney,
Australia, is married to a man with
celiac disease who was unable to eat
any of her baked delicacies — until she
developed gluten-free flour blends that
allowed her to make gluten-free versions
of virtually any recipe.
Blends by Orly are kosher, gluten-
free certified, nut-free, corn-free and
dairy-free — suitable for vegans as well.
While at the Cordon Bleu school in
Sydney, she perfected gluten-free ver-
sions of assigned dishes. Her secret is a
blending of flours to match the particu-
lar recipe.

cream puffs, cakes and Danish:' she says.
She developed five blends, each for a
different purpose such as breads, cookies
or pizza dough, that are made with com-
binations of gluten-free grains including
sorghum, millet, quinoa, coconut and
brown rice, in different proportions, plus
xanthan gum to promote elasticity.
Blends are sold in 20-ounce re-seal-
able flat-bottom bags, each with a recipe
on the back. The flours have a 12-month
shelf life and sell for $8.99 each. For
