Yeshiva Shout-Out

Gov. Snyder uplifted by talking to students.

A

Jewish day school educa-
tion is "an investment in
our future, our precious
future — our children:' Michigan
Gov. Rick Snyder told a capacity
crowd of 2,200 at Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah's annual dinner Oct 25 in
Downtown Detroit.
In his remarks, the governor said
he recently visited the Yeshiva to talk
with students and "see where their
hearts were:' Their love for learning
and reverence for Torah, he said,
"reinforced for me why this school is
so special."
The $250-a-plate dinner, held Oct.
25 at Marriott Hotel Renaissance
Center, supports student scholar-
ships. Most of the 950 students on
the Yeshiva's Southfield and Oak Park
campuses receive financial assistance.
Gary Shiffman was named the
newest Yeshiva Guardian for his fam-
ily's generosity in support of Jewish
education and his commitment as a
Yeshiva ambassador. U.S. Sen. Ben
Cardin, D-Md., was keynote speaker.
Ron Klein, a child of Holocaust

survivors, accepted the Outstanding
Leadership Award in appreciation of
his longstanding Jewish activism and
leadership inspired by serving the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. His late uncle Emery Klein,
who survived Auschwitz along with
Ron's father, Bernie, received the
same Yeshiva honor in 1996.
"What is happening here in this
room tonight and what happens
every day on the campuses of Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah," Klein said, "is, as my
Uncle Emery said that night in 1996,
`the greatest revenge for what Hitler
and his monsters attempted to do to
the people of the Jewish faith.."'
In his state of the 101-year-old
school address, President Gary
Torgow of Oak Park said: "It is the
Yeshiva's calling, and its historic
obligation, to address every need of
every child.
"Beth Yehudah places the same
critical emphasis on the highest aca-
demic achievers as they do on those
beautiful children with specific chal-
lenges and unique needs:" \ *
