Absinthe Minded
T
he Whitney has added another unique twist to
the mansion lumber baron David Whitney Jr. once
called home. The Detroit landmark known for
world class dining will now serve absinthe — the highly
alcoholic and purportedly hallucinogenic spirit that draws
its unique flavor from wormwood, anise and fennel.
Made popular in France at the turn of the century,
but made illegal in the United States and across Europe
by 1915, the drink is now featured
Wednesdays through Sundays in a
small space on the restaurant's third-
floor, adjacent to its popular Ghostbar.
Drink enough and maybe you'll see the
other kind of spirits many claim still
roam the building's eerie corridors.
If you're in the mood for more than
just cocktails, you can't miss with din-
ner or the restaurant's signature Sunday
Ryan
brunch (named Hour magazine's 2015
Fishman
Best Brunch in Detroit). My personal
favorite is their house specialty, a decadent Beef Wellington
with prosciutto, spinach and mushrooms in a veal cabernet
sauce.
Special menu events are planned through the end of the
year, including a Thanksgiving buffet, seasonal holiday
lunch and New Year's Eve. Also making your visit worth-
while is the dessert parlor and bakeshop, which opened in
its own space on the third floor earlier this year to feature
the decadent creations of the restaurant's executive pastry
chef.

LUCKY MIDTOWN
A fourth location for Pho Lucky opened its doors
in Midtown this week (3111 Woodward Ave.). The
Vietnamese restaurant is known for drawing crowds to its
Redford, Novi and Southfield locations with its eponymous
broth dish.
Of course, there's more to the menu than just soup, and
the Detroit location will also serve beer and wine when
its liquor license comes through, expected sometime this
month.
SO MANY CHOICES!
Chain 1000 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza opened its first
Michigan location this month near the Macomb Mall in
Roseville (32427 Gratiot). The restaurant will be operated
by local franchise partner Capital Pizza Ventures and fea-
ture more than 50 cheeses, sauces, meats and vegetables for
personalized, made-to-order pizzas in 10-inch and 14-inch
sizes. There are plans to open at least three more locations
in Michigan over the course of the next year, adding to the
80 other locations across the country.
NEW PLUMS
Just in case you do your grocery shopping at the airport,
the latest Plum Market location opened last week in a
3,700 square foot space inside the McNamara Terminal.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner options will be available, fea-
turing prepared foods by Zingerman's. A fourth Michigan
location for the Farmington Hills-headquartered grocer
was also scheduled to open this week in Ann Arbor (3601
Plymouth Road).
TOWNSEND PARTY
Don't miss one of the year's hottest parties — Tickets will
sell out fast for Thanksgiving Eve at the Townsend Hotel
(Nov. 25), but they're still available at neptix.com.
