DRAMA AND COMEDY

Opening Nov. 13: By the Sea is a modest-
budget, very personal film, directed and
written by Angelina Jolie Pitt and somewhat
inspired by her own mother's difficult life and
early death. Sea follows Roland, an American
writer (Brad Pitt), and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie
Pitt), as they vacation at a beautiful French
seaside resort in the 1970s. They try to come
to terms with the crisis in their marriage as
they spend time with other travelers, includ-
ing young newlyweds Francois and Lea
(played by Melanie Laurent, 33, a talented
French actress who co-starred in Inglorious
Basterds and Beginners).
Jolie Pitt, by the way, spends a lot of time
in the South of France, including several
months before the birth of her twins in 2008.
She wanted to be near Dr. Michel Sussman,
now 63, a top Nice-based Jewish OB/GYN
who brought her through the twins' difficult
pregnancy and birth. Michel's son, Arnaud
Sussman, 31, is a concert violinist who will
perform with the Grand Rapids Symphony
this coming April.

release of this season's biggest comedic

Christmas movie, Love the Coopers. But note
that this is the first time that two octogenarian
Jewish Oscar nominees are co-starring in the
same movie. Four generations of the Coopers
get together for the holiday, with the old-
est generation represented by June Squibb
(Oscar nominee for Nebraska), 85, and Alan
Arkin (the four-time Oscar nominee won for
Little Miss Sunshine), 81. Co-stars include Diane
Keaton, John Goodman and Olivia Wilde.
