- Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Lynne Konstantin I Arts & Life Editor
Beth Singer I Photographer

ABOV "We call it an Alice in Wonderland kind of

house;' Weinstein says. Because the couple entertains

often, more likely to have a gathering at home than

go out with friends, the homeowner wanted the

I. always like to take risks:' says the owner of this Bloomfield Hills home.
"A lot of people don't want to stand out, even if it's beautiful. But I didn't want anything
km about my house to look like anyone else's:'
So she turned to designer Amy Miller Weinstein, owner of AMW Design Studio in
Birmingham. "She actually challenged me to think outside my box:' Weinstein says. "I love
wallpapers and textures, which there is a lot of here, but she would not settle for anything
typical. Working with someone creative and funny, but who also trusted me, really set me free
to come up with something really interesting:'
The priority for the homeowner and her husband, both doctors, was to have a place for
everything belonging to their four children, ranging in age from 10 to 17. And because
Weinstein was able to work with Birmingham architect Christopher Enright and builder Todd
Emerson, owner of Sterling Development in Bloomfield Township, from the ground up, "she
helped with room size, layout - I told her what I wanted space for, and she did it:' the home-
owner says. "I wanted this closet for winter coats, hockey bags here, the laundry room and
mudroom here so everything had a home. I wanted a system, and Amy created a flow:'
Now, she says, "anybody who comes into my house says, 'Oh, my God, ifs totally you: It's
fun and energetic and livable. I walk into my house and I feel really lucky:' *

great room to be"more of an 'experience' room;'

Weinstein says. "She wanted it to feel clubby, like a

hotel lobby." A center-cut sofa, covered in a shiny

cherry red, perfectly frames the fireplace. Tom Myers

of Gallery Steel in Waterford fabricated Weinstein's

design for the metal fireplace surround. To fill the

massive wall space above, without cluttering the

precision of the room, Weinstein created a frame-

within-a-frame mirror, one bronze, the other

clear, and glued industrial nailhead studs around

the exterior frame. "The room doesn't have the

suggestion of restraint, but it's there;' Weinstein

says. "There's no need to display anything on the

mantel, which [the homeowner] doesn't like. And

the walls and floors are kept very quiet." Rather than

filling the fireplace-flanked niches with bookcases,

Weinstein chose simple, sculptural planters that

further highlight the spectacular, geometric Kravet

wallpaper.
